I bought both this book (Pilates: Body in Motion by Alycea Ungaro) and The Pilates Body by Brooke Siler and I'm glad that I bought both.For me, a total beginner at Pilates who is taking 1 beginner mat group class a week at a local Pilates studio, I needed something to guide me at home so that I could do Pilates workouts several times a week.I think that Pilates: Body in Motion is better for learning the exercises because the photos are better and they show the whole sequence. But I have also found that if I read both books' descriptions of a particular exercise that I get the benefit of 2 of the most highly respected Pilates trainers in the world. So it's a win/win to have both books. Also, instead of doing the same Modified Beginner or Beginner sequence each time from one of the books, I can alternate days by doing the Modified Beginner/Beginner in the other book. That gives me some variety.. although they are, of course, similar.The long and the short of it is.... I highly recommend both books and am very glad that I purchased both.The other thing that I use regularly is the DVD Pilates Workout for Dummies with Michelle Dozois. I bought several beginner Pilates DVDs and that is my favorite. My 2nd favorite is Hilary Burnett's Pilates Basics which is short, but very very good for beginners. She also has an Intermediate level DVD which I am not ready for... yet.

I've used a couple of DVDs to learn Pilates (no, I can't afford classes) and they just did not inspire me to keep with the routine. I've been using this book for just a few days but I find that #1 I like a book better because I can go at my own pace and there is no annoying music or shrill instructor's voice and #2 the book has a refreshing lack of motivational yada-yada and instead goes on the assumption that you CAN do it, and since you bought the book you already WANT to do it.The photos are clear and understandable and I also appreciated the breathing instructions, the Cautions (for example, "If you experience back pain while holding your legs up...") and the Visualizations ("Imagine molding your body into the shape of a tremendous horseshoe"). Each exercise includes a photo of what you may be doing incorrectly, and a "Head-to-toe checklist". The emphasis is on doing each exercise as perfectly to form as possible and becoming strong and controlled; not on doing more, faster, or how skinny you're supposed to get.All the exercises are for the mat or the wall, so no equipment or gadgets are needed, either. Great book!!

I have recently started out with practicing Pilates, thinking that as a dancer it would help with my strength and form (and I also have a weak back and degenerative disk disease, which means that I had to stop pounding myself on the pavement with running). This manual was suggested by many other readers when I was seeking a good instructional book on Pilates. I had already purchased Michelle Dozois' "Pilates for Dummies" DVD, which was my very first introduction to Pilates, and I got through the basics and some of the intermediate moves okay, so I figured it was time to graduate to a more detailed instructional resource. Alycea Ungaro's manual is well-written, with high-quality color photographs of models executing each exercise in perfect form (something I still have yet to work on with the advanced moves). I am already doing the advanced routine (albeit not in full extension for some of the moves, as they are very challenging and require much longer conditioning), but I push myself to struggle through it until I can achieve each exercise with just as perfect form. I've substituted my original treadmill climbing and weights workout for Pilates over the past month, and am already seeing results in my core strength and posture. My back felt strained after the initial introductory workouts to Pilates, but I'm getting stronger and feeling less of that strain after each workout. Overall, I would strongly recommend this manual for a beginning student of Pilates, as it is the clearest and most concise guide out there, I'm sure...although, I am still purchasing Brooke Siler's 2 manuals just for comparison and to see if any new challenging exercises are offered in her books.

A pilates instructor is a must, no book will replace an instructor. Hence, if you are a pilates beginner that is training with an instructor, this book is a fantastic addition to your home routine. It provides excellent tips and the pictures really depict each single important movement for each pilates exercise. It has three levels, beginner, intermediate and advanced. So positions for each level are carefully explained. This is critical, if you are a beginner and you are in great shape (in pilates means that you are flexible for deep stretching), you might be able to do the same exercise in a complete different position than someone who is a beginner and is not flexible enough. The book shows all the positions for these three levels of body flexibility. Although the pictures show the models exercising in yoga mats, it is not a good idea to practice in a yoga mat. Use a good quality folding mat (even more if you have a lean body structure).

Others have gone into great detail why this is such a great book, but the thing I really found useful is that it not only shows you what to do, it shows what you look like when you're doing an exercise improperly. Not everyone learns well from anti-patterns, but I found the pictures of the right and wrong ways to do an exercise especially helpful.I'm currently on my third copy of this book- not because it has worn out, because I keep giving to other people as a gift. It really is the best available book for learning how to do Mat Pilates exercises. It's not only well written, it's also well designed and well edited, with great layout and indicies.

Robert M. Thorson―scientist, teacher, writer― is Professor of Geology at the University of Connecticut, where he holds a joint appointment between the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) and the Department of Anthropology, with additional responsibilities to the Honors Program and the Integrated Geosciences Program. He teaches courses, advises students, performs sponsored research, serves on committees, and provides articles, reviews and interviews. Just got a copy of this book for myself after reading a library copy and realizing I had to have a copy for myself. If you really want to get a feel for the sweep of time, geology, the love of stone not just as an "artifact' but as "scientific object" a particular "landform" born of glaciers a mile high and human hands seeing to plant a crop in a stony field. I love his "passion for rocks." This is a must-read if you are a true New Englander (whether you've ever lived here or not). I will cherish it for its poetry as much as for its prose. A thing well-written is a joy forever.

As an ex-north east resident this was a nice historical read on how and why the stone walls were created that I had never heard in the time I had lived there!

The very best kind of popular science. It's direct, believable, and easy to read and enjoy. I moved here to New England about 14 years ago and I just bought this. It's given me a new way to look at the streetside and forest walls I pass every day on car and bike.

Very interesting history book. Since I had family in the Jamestown Colony and Mass Bay Colony, it also reminded me of the back breaking work necessary to make a field to raise animals and hay on.

I am a novice builder of stone walls and was looking for a bit of history and some building tips. The history is in the book but the writing style was difficult for me.

I live in the northeast where I have observed these fences. I had no idea I could find such an informed book about them. Now when I see them I know how and why they are there. Good research explained for the non-geologists among us.

Our house that we had built 10 years ago is surrounded by a stone wall and I have always wondered how it came about. While it doesn't talk specifically about our property, it does answer where the stone walls in NH came from and it is so interesting to read. I am so glad he did the research and wrote this book, because I think we take these walls for granted by them just always being there. I appreciate them so much more now.

You have to be able to improvise as many of the ingredients aren't available everywhere, or are cost prohibitive.Black bean and beet burgers sound delicious but the recipe is labor intensive. From grinding the oats to make oat flour to cooking whole beets and mashing them, I don't have the time to make a recipe this labor intensive, never mind costly, just to end up with bean burgers.Chocolate Beet Bundt cake had me asking why?There's a recipe for cranberry juice that just sounds delicious. And a great recipe for curing lemons, that I have started already. This recipe claims to keep lemons for a minimum of 3 months in the the refrigerator.Again, there are great recipes that give me ideas, but there are only two of us here and it isn't prudent for us to use so many ingredients in our meals. This would be great for a large family that has access to lots of fresh vegetables and exotic ingredients, if the cook in the house has a lot of time to prepare meals.

I'm always looking for ways to increase our vegetable consumption and this book looked really good. Some recipes call for ingredients that may be hard to find outside the Pacific NW, for me, when you get a book that specifically mentions an area in the title, I figure local, hard to find ingredients, can be a factor.However, there are plenty of easily sourced, fast fix recipes in here that are really good. The puree of black beans and rice is easy, quickly comes together, filling and packs a flavor punch with the cumin and chipolte packed in adobe.The spinach pancakes with feta butter wasn't difficult, but it was a totally new taste experience that was really good and surprising. Egg fried brown rice with cabbage and apples puts a twist on both fried rice and the idea of cabbage and apples as only a German inspired pork dish.Wild rice with roasted cranberries, chile oil, and sunflower seeds works as a summer dish, and would also make a great appearance on a Thanksgiving table. It was hard to leave enough roasted cranberries for the recipe.Tomatoes are a favorite of mine, and the cherry tomato cobbler with cheddar biscuit topping is simply delicious. Everything I want in a warm, rustic, tomato dish.I really liked the interesting and inventive flavor combinations. Some went to far but when I find a book that inspires me to try new combinations and they turn out yummy, the book becomes a keeper. In today's world of online ordering and expanded shopping, finding items like chickpea flour becomes easier.

Note: though there are many vegan recipes, this is primarily a vegetarian recipe book. The description doesn't make this clear, but I wanted to put this out there in case anyone was wondering.That being said, the recipes are often vegan, often simple, and if not vegan, they are easily modified by substituting Earth Balance, olive oil, vegan yogurts or sour creams, etc...We've tried a few of the simple recipes and they are very tasty and easy to make. The book has a very user friendly layout and is very easy to read when making recipes.My one slight little knock down to four stars is just that many of the recipes are pretty basic. Salt and pepper tofu for example: tofu, oil, salt, pepper. Basic indeed. But they can be nice for those wanting a quick inspiration and not having a lot of time to peruse a complex set of cookbooks for ideas.The main focus of this recipe book is veggies of course, and there are a lot of fun ways to prepare the wonderful produce bounty of the Pacific Northwest from a fellow Pacific Northwesterner.

Having been a vegetarian for over a decade, I am always on the lookout for new and unusual ideas to add into my lunch and dinner rotation. "PNW Veg" collects 100 recipes inspired by the Pacific Northwest, with nods to regional ingredients like fiddlehead ferns, sea beans, and stinging nettles. The fact that I know anything about those subjects at all is because I was enthusiastic for them, which puts Dixon to blame for most of what I know about the natural world. When I read The Art of Language Invention, the same thing happened with linguistics.You can’t create a good made-up language without knowing about real languages. Through the lens of his invented languages and his experience using them, Peterson educates the reader about the forces that shape the way we speak—a practical gift wrapped in shiny packaging. Like all good speculation, The Art of Language Invention educates and inspires as much as it entertains.And it IS entertaining, if for no other reason than the cat and onion jokes.Go read it. If you’ve been creating languages for decades and just need a fresh perspective, a good laugh, or some commiseration, check this out. If you’re a linguistics student struggling with the basics, and your Intro to Linguistics reading is so dry you can’t choke it down, this could easily pass as a funny, entertaining, and fairly complete Linguistics 101 textbook, with some conlanging on the side.

I came across this title while reviewing a fascinating game in Kickstarter called "Dialect." When I was a teenager, I discovered Tolkien and, through Tolkien, the idea of constructed languages ("conlanging"). I was hooked, and my ambition was to become a linguist. While those ambitions faded over time, the interests did not, and this book kept me reading from front to back. The author's sense of humor as well as his enthusiasm for the work is infectious. The details he provides give a fantastic glimpse into the workings of language and writing, as well as a fascinating history of the art form.

If you have the patience yo go through several chapters of the anatomy of a language, before getting to the nitty gritty of how to build one, then this book is perfect for you. Despite the fact that I gook several linguistics courses during my Bachelors and masters degrees, I really struggled with the first part of the book. It can be daunting, with dozens of terms that only a linguist would recognize, but it had to be covered if one were to attempt constructing a decent language. The latter part was quite interesting, and I was especially fascinated by font creation. Now I'm ready to construct my first language (a hybrid of several languages as a result of 500 years of several cultures cohabiting on one new colonized planet.) Here goes.

The information provided (that I could get to) is incredible, especially for world building, but the Kindle version is full of formatting errors (or at least my version was). Pages missing, pages repeated, and other oddities throughout the first quarter of the book (I couldn't get past that for frustration, but I will go back and try again, because the gems in there are awesome). It was incredibly difficult to go through to get to the meat of the book. As a linguist and a polymath, I was champing at the bit to read this one, but the constant errors in pagination made it a slog. I hope the errors get corrected so that I can get to the good stuff, because Mr. Peterson's prose and knowledge certainly bear looking into.

I create languages for fun. This book validated a lot of what I was already doing and gave new and brilliant ideas and instruction that I'll definitely use in the future. It's a bit difficult to read if you aren't already passionate about language, linguistics, or how words work, but if you are, this is definitely worth reading.

Peterson is gifted in the area of language creation. I read part of this book as an excerpt and decided it would be well worth the purchase. I have enjoyed this book a lot, I've learned a lot, and I was entertained through the entire read. This will be one I keep within reach and refer to again and again.

I've been working on my own language since a high-school game I played with a friend. More recently I've been trying to make it realistic, but I just didn't know enough about languages. This book filled in quite a few holes in my knowledge! I overhauled my whole language from the roots up and I feel far more confident in it!

'priest' doesn't have tones everywhere for shading; the creator said in an interview in one of the books that toned mangas all look somewhat alike & he wanted something different. i'd say he succeeded in that.

I have gotten at least four Frommer's guidebooks before and it's always been quite good. Until I got this one, the first ever NOT in the Day-By-Day series. What a huge mistake. First, this book doesn't have a street level view of the entire area. You know, the one they always have in the Day-By-Day book? Then everything is pink. Not exactly color map, but pastel pinkish maps. It is so hard to look at it. I don't think I have ever gotten pissed off from a guidebook before, but this one definitely got to me. Finally, there is no picture... of anything. Just lots of words. I don't want a guidebook with words! I'd get a history book in that case. I don't want to look for words in a paragraph when I'm lost in Hong Kong! I want pictures, maps, characters that'll help me find things ASAP. I'm done venting about this book. Just don't get this book. I'm returning it right now.

The pullout map of greater Hong Kong has a laughable error. It indicates the entire Hong Kong Island is less than 1/2 mile long. Hope that was fixed in later editions.

The reading is not only informative but very interesting. I read a lot of information on travel. When I'm planning a trip I generally read or brouse at least two or three guides. I've always found Frommer's to be reliable and the most informative.

Excellent guide

It's a great book, but the fold-out map is useless. The map is basic and almost generic looking. Buy it for the book, not the map.

Must for travel or moving to SE Asia

Just back from Hong Kong and of the three guide books I took, Frommer's was the most helpful. The restaurant suggestions were great. The maps accurate. The walking tours terrific. The only downside is that the design of the book is ugly. Really ugly. Also wish that it included information about the two closest cities in China - Guangzhou and Shenzhen so I could have left one of the guides home.
