Donavin discovered how to survive among fauna and flora from the Sonoran Desert to the peaks of the Santa Catalina Mountains in southern Arizona. A dream career was offered to him. For twenty-five years he worked as an Oregon Department Of Fish and Wildlife project leader and scientist in ecological research: first on free ranging Rocky Mountain Mule Deer in the High Desert Shrub Steppe and Ponderosa Pine and Western Juniper Forests of south central Oregon; second with Rocky Mountain Elk throughout the Mixed Conifer Forests in the Blue Mountains of northeast Oregon. He became Co-leader with Jack Ward Thomas to design and initiate studies of elk responses to habitat manipulation within the forty square mile enclosure of the Starkey Project near La Grande, Oregon. Donavin was told he had to quit enjoying work, and for five years was liaison between Wildlife, Fisheries, and Habitat Divisions in Portland, Oregon Headquarters, ODFW. Part of the job was to “educate” other agencies who’s objectives were not as aware of wildlife’s habitat needs as we would’ve liked. He made annual circuits of professional meetings and presented research at state, national and international forums. He has published results through agency reports and in national journal papers.

I remember reading a page on the net several years ago, which was a cartoon detailing a fishing trip with Jeffrey Dahmer and a friend when they were teenagers. On this trip, young Jeff caught a sunfish and, instead of throwing it back as his friend asked, he proceeded to chop it to death with a pocket knife.I have always remembered this, but have never found the page again.Just this past Sunday I found out it was part of an actual book called My Friend Dahmer, written by Derf Backderf. So I checked out the Amazon Look Inside bits, and was interested enough to get a copy. It arrived Monday, and I've been through it twice since then.It's not so much the drawing style, which is basically R Crumb, but the haunting story it tells of Dahmer before he became a serial killer, when he was a child and something might have been done for him, if the adults around him had only looked up from their own self-absorption and seen there was something terribly terribly wrong. Backderf makes no bones about his sympathy (pity, really) for Dahmer ending when Dahmer committed his first murder; however, he also draws an unflinching picture of Dahmer's loneliness, his isolation from others and from his family, and his (Backderf's) own participation in making Dahmer feel less than human.I'm a contemporary of the kids depicted in this book -- I graduated high school in 1975, they graduated in 1978. I was an outcast, and was bullied about as badly as Dahmer. I was pretty much ignored by my parents and the teachers. But why didn't I become a serial killer? Why am I reasonably well adjusted, and have been a contributing member of society for lo, these 40 some odd years since graduation? What makes one person become an average wife/mom/worker bee, and one person the worst serial killer in recent history?I think those are all questions that keep me turning back to this book, and that make me recommend it to all y'all out there. There are no graphic depictions of murder, death or gore -- a couple of illustrations of roadkill and one incident which shows that Dahmer, even in his descent into madness, still retained a core of humanity and kindness many "normal" people don't have. At least until he finally crossed the line and became a murderer.Well worth the money, well worth the read.

So once upon a time, there was this guy named Jeffrey Dahmer. You might’ve heard of him. In 1991, he got caught trying to abduct a guy in Milwaukee, and police found a human head in his refrigerator, along with human remains stored in barrels and various severed body parts scattered around his apartment. He’s one of the most notorious serial killers in history.Back in ’91, there was an editorial cartoonist called Derf Backderf working for a paper in Cleveland. His wife, also a reporter at the paper, calls him, tells him about this serial killer they’ve arrested in Milwaukee, and drops a bomb on him — Backderf graduated from high school with the guy.So Backderf spends a few years wrestling with the fact that he was friends with a future serial killer and eventually sits down, does a ton of research, and creates this graphic novel, “My Friend Dahmer,” a retelling of his interactions as a teenager with this kid who everyone laughed at and no one really understood.Backderf and his circle of friends discovered Dahmer after he’d started impersonating a person with cerebral palsy and throwing fake epileptic fits to get attention. Dahmer was a stone freak, but his antics were amusing in the juvenile way we all enjoy when we’re in high school, and they encouraged him as much as they could, even calling themselves the “Dahmer Fan Club.” Backderf remembers him as a really strange kid, sometimes disturbing, usually harmless, often depressing. He drank heavily in high school — a fact that a number of students were aware of, but that every teacher apparently missed — hiding beer and hard liquor around the school grounds so he’d always be able to sneak out and find something to drink.Ultimately, it’s a really sympathetic portrait of Dahmer. Not to say that it’s entirely Dahmer-positive — Backderf says more than once that Dahmer is a kid he feels tremendous sympathy and empathy for — but that goes away when he crosses the line into murder. But Backderf knew Dahmer as a sad, strange kid with parents struggling through mental health issues and a very nasty divorce. Dahmer wanted attention, like a lot of kids, he was darkly funny, like a lot of kids, and he was conflicted when he realized he was gay, like a lot of kids. Of course, not a lot of kids also realize they’re necrophiliacs and have to struggle with urges to do violence to others. But even then, Backderf recognizes that Dahmer went through a very stressful high school career and kept himself together — admittedly with huge doses of alcohol — until after graduation.Backderf says that he thinks Jeff Dahmer, the disturbed teenager, could have been saved if only the adults in his life had paid closer attention to him and cared enough to get involved. We’ll never know for sure, of course, but that doesn’t do anything to make this book any less fascinating.This is a pretty thick book, and I burned through it as fast as I could, including the section detailing Backderf’s research and notes. Backderf’s writing about Dahmer is captivating and humanizing in all the best ways — this isn’t something that glorifies a serial killer, but instead asks us to look at how the serial killer was created, at Dahmer’s depressingly rotten youth, at all the ways this kid was failed by the grownups who were supposed to be helping him.The setting is also pretty amazing — Revere High School in West Allis, Ohio in the mid- to late-1970s is a great backdrop for all of this to happen. Locked-down schools, zero tolerance, and No Child Left Behind were 20-30 years in the future, and the book is both stereotypically ’70s-ish and simultaneously timeless — we’ve all felt this way about school, we’ve all been freaked out by our adolescent hormones, we’ve all wondered whether we’d survive to get out of school and wondered what happened to the people we used to hang with.This isn’t a horror story, at least not in the traditional sense. If you read it hoping for blood and gore and psycho killer mayhem, you’re going to be very disappointed. If we can call it horror at all, it’s more a matter of the horror of how one person can go from being a pretty normal kid to the kind of lunatic who’d kill 17 people. It’s a heck of a good story, and I think you should read it.

This book took me about the length of a movie to read. I know some people knock this book but they must not like comic books or don't know how to read them or prefer gore or something. I wasn't crazyAbout the art style at first but t quickly grew on me as I got drawn very quickly into the story. I don't feel it drags at any moment and is a very haunting story. I can remember the "dahmers" from our school- boys who acted very much like he did. I was more in the shoes of what author- I wasn't popular, I was the art kid in the school always drawing and I had a few acquaintances much like he did. Makes you wonder what those peoples lives are like behind closed doors. I'm drawling on too much so I'll end this review here. If you enjoy comic books and dark things interest you especially based on true things, this book is for you!!!!

Not a bad cookbook on Cuban food, especially for a beginner or someone who has only tried it in restaurants. I have tried some recipes and, while not as good as those handed down by family with a more homey touch or personal touches, it is fairly representative of what you eat in restaurants in general and Versailles in particular.For something less commercial, something more like what you would eat at the home of a Cuban family (especially if the hostess is a good cook) I highly recommend "The Cuban Table."

I purchased this book for my mom. I bought mine at Versailles Restaurant in Miami, I love the simplicity of the recipes and the taste is just like being at the famous Versailles Restaurant in Maimi,

Ingredients are accurate, preparation instructions aren't ......so confusing and out of sequence....The restaurant is dear to the Cubans hearts, when you visit Miami you need to eat there...is like visitingFamily

OK, it's not exactly like mama used to make, but I love this Restaurant so much that I had to have their recipes...just in case. Besides I live in Dallas and Miami is quite a hike for authentic Cuban.

(you know, the ones who pay you … well) She's sharing a list that she and her peers use themselves—where they find high-paying clients. Throw in a dash of best practices on how to covert one job into a recurring paying relationship with a client, and this book is well worth the $0.99. I can't even believe I'm saying that.

A very dry "read" but an excellent reference for those interested in how the British crime novel evolved. I didn't know how much I was missing this book until I got my hands on it from the library and within a day of reading through it, I knew I needed my own copy. This really is a reference book, and a wonderful one. It's intricate and makes sense. The reader doesn't have to know anything going in, and will know a lot of incredibly interesting information coming out. Building from the beginning, we see how British crime novels have been influenced and influenced others. While there are only 100 books "officially" listed, the mentions are never-ending, and I now have an even longer TBR list. I can only hope to live long enough to read some of them. I wish there was a companion for American crime novels, but no matter. This is exactly what it is supposed to be.

If you enjoy classic mystery stories, this is a great place to start. I have read all kinds of mysteries for over 60 years. What I liked was that I learned about some authors I had missed along the way. Highly recommended.

I received an e-ARC of this book through NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press. Thank you.The crime stories written during the Golden Age of crime have proven their ability to remain entertaining and even addictive among modern readers of crime fiction. These books are different in many ways from the modern novels but if you look closely you will recognize an aspect in the modern book which mirrors a theme or technique which was once considered brand new. Martin Edwards has once again given me a method for studying the classic crime novel and the authors who paved the way for all the changes which have taken place within the genre. This book confines itself to the first half of the last century, between 1901 and 1950, and is a companion to the series of the British Library's series of crime classics. If you've enjoyed reading any of those reprints, this work will go far toward filling out your knowledge of the authors, titles, and themes which moved the classic crime fiction stories forward as they continued to change and evolve.There is simply too much information in this book to give anything like a list of authors or even a list of book titles. I can tell you that there are twenty-four chapters, each dealing with a different aspect of the novels from miraculous murders (also called impossible murders) to the lure of the countryside, the English manor house, the amateur detective, the educated sleuth, the backlash against politicians and on and on. In each chapter Edwards explains the theme, gives a brief synopsis of the examples of the novels he has chosen to illustrate the theme and a brief biography of the author. Each chapter discusses four or five novels. The book as a whole moves in a more or less chronological order, at least in the easiest way for the format to do that.The book also contains an Introduction, Select Bibliography, Index of Titles, and an Index of Authors which all provide a tremendous amount of detail on the subject. This is a book to savor, a book to keep as a reference guide, a book to help you find authors you aren't familiar with but want to try to track down. Even the most well known authors may have a novel mentioned in this collection which you have missed. I was equally surprised at how many of the authors and stories I was familiar with as well as how many authors I knew nothing about. Even though I initially read this book in digital format I already know I will have to get the print edition so it can go on my shelf of Classic Age crime fiction reference books. How could I resist?

‘The Story of Classic Crime in 100 Books’ by Martin Edwards (himself an award-winning crime writer) serves as a companion to the British Library’s series of Crime Classics but spreads its net wider to include some books which originated outside Britain, such as Ellery Queen’s ‘Calamity Town’ and George Simenon’s ‘Pietr the Latvian’.Edwards defines a ‘classic’ crime book as “a novel or story collection published between 1901 and 1950 which … remain of particular interest … to present-day lovers of detective fiction” because of their “plot, character, setting, humour, social or historic significance” or some combination of these factors. It is not a list of ‘best’ or ‘favourite’ titles but seeks to showcase, within a broadly chronological and thematic approach, the diversity of the genre. Thus although many well-known books by authors of literary merit such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, G. K. Chesterton and Dorothy Leigh Sayers are included, room is also made for more pedestrian authors and more obscure volumes.Edwards claims that as “far as possible, I have avoided including ‘spoilers’ revealing solutions to mysteries”. Sometimes he could have tried harder, for example, in relation to G. K. Chesterton’s ‘The Invisible Man’, although to be fair the title of that short story itself comes pretty close to acting as a spoiler in itself. Somewhat oddly, Edwards refers to the recent Mark Williams incarnation of Father Brown but not that of Kenneth More or Alec Guinness, the latter being all the more surprising given that the film ‘Father Brown – Detective’ is loosely based on the short story ‘The Blue Cross’, which he specifically mentions in his piece on ‘The Innocence of Father Brown’.Nevertheless, the overriding impression is that Edwards really knows his stuff and relishes in sharing his knowledge. His book is probably best dipped into, although reading the introduction to each chapter provides an enjoyable potted history of crime fiction over the period covered. Thus, like all good books, this one is likely to stimulate further reading.

Great wisdom for a relaxed lifestyle. I gave this to my wife for her birthday because we love sloths, and she has a tendency to get over-stressed at work. This fun little book has great wisdom, fun illustrations, and is a wonderful conversation starter on our coffee table. Would highly recommend for that stressed out sloth-lover in your life.

My younger sister is very sloth-like. She sleeps all day and all night and has a 4.0 in high school, carries a part time job and has a very care free attitude. This book may be mini (~ 3" x 3") but its insides are bursting with greatness. I'd say it meets the 3 P's criteria - Precious, Pithy and Priceless. Precious in its wonderful illustrations. And, Pithy & Priceless in the pearls (oops I sneaked another "P" in) of wisdom it has to offer. You can only imagine how inspiring it is if it motivated me to stop hanging around and write this review... Seriously, get yourself a copy - no matter what your age. Feasting on all the fruits of their native land, sloths ponder the meaning of life and our existence in the universe. Through this book they pass on their wisdom to us, the wayward human race. Very cute little book and a perfect stocking stuffer for a sloth lover. Has a nice little page at the front for a “To:” and “From:” inscription. The dustjacket has the sleeping sloth on the tree branch as shown in the website photo; without the dustjacket the front cover just has the book's title showing with no sloth. The little bookmark with the smiley token is a nice extra touch!

Got this to send to my daughter who just loves sloths ever since we saw Zootopia. I always make fun of her and call her a sloth because she is just naturally very easy going and slow moving. We don't say it in a bad way, its just our little inside joke. So I got this for her and she loves the little quotes and the humor in this book. She is 9

This book is precious. I bought it for my sloth loving friend and she died when she saw it (not literally). The book is a bunch of quotes about being sloth-like and with some great word substitutions. My personal favorite, "Be the nap you want to see in the world." Recommend for a laugh and some inspiration.

Its a cute little book with some good quotes and words to live by. Got it as a stocking stuffer for a friend of mine who I have an inside joke with about Sloth's and she loved it. Think it probably fits even better as an adult gift rather than kids.
