Good story for kids.

The paperback arrived in good condition and had excellent drawn photos throughout. I foresee myself purchasing more from this collection as gifts for my nephews. There are enough photos to keep the not-so-good reader interested, not to mention the stories of the famous and no-as-famous people.

My 7 year old is into aviation, but I liked this book (and so did he) as a way to relate famous flyers to the children they once were, at the age my son is now. This is the kind of book kids will learn history from, when it is interesting and relevant to them. It also discusses what qualities he had as a person, from the time he was young, that allowed him to succeed at what he enjoyed. My son enjoyed it very much.

In keeping with the Centennial of Flight -- Rebeccasreads recommends this book as a look at how Eddie Rickenbacker, an Ohio farm boy with Swiss roots, grew up to become a World War 1 Flying Ace, a founder of our commercial aviation, a pioneer racecar driver & the owner of no less than the famed Indianpolis 500 Speedway.Originally published 80 years ago, Patria Press is re-issuing the Young Patriot Series -- all fine stories about the childhoods of many of our heroes & heroines.

Great book. My 5 year old son loved it. He is kind of an aviation nerd!

The Complete Peanuts Volume 3: 1955-1956, by Charles M. Schulz

Amazon.com Review

In 1955-56, the Peanuts gang may have still been in first grade (or lower), but the characters continue to grow into their distinctive and unmistakable personalities. Snoopy overcomes some embarrassment to reveal his talent for impressions (wolf, rhino, alligator, kangaroo, Violet, etc.) and his joyous dance-the-day-away attitude. Linus adopts the same attitude ("Five hundred years from now, who'll know the difference?") and continues to show his genius in such diverse activities as square balloons, snow sculptures, and air sketches, even though he has to resort to wishful violence against his bullying sister. Lucy, now a ripe old 4, has to face such concerns as the Earth being worn down by people's feet and whether Santa exists. And already concerned about getting married, she tries to divert Schroeder's attention from Beethoven either by logic (what's the sense in learning Beethoven sonatas if you don't win a prize?), by sympathy ("My favorite piece is Bach's Toccata and Fugue in Asia Minor"), or by violence, and pulls away the football from Charlie Brown for the first time (December 1956). She also teaches her brother "little-known facts" about the world (palm trees were so named because people can fit their hand around them), which gives Charlie Brown stomach aches and formed part of the stage musical You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. But she'll never lose an argument as long as she can end it with a well-placed insult. Such is the misery of Charlie Brown, who also has to endure his failure to fly a kite, his complete failure on the baseball diamond, and misery during any holiday. That he does endure, however, makes him one of the heroes of our time. The third volume of Fantagraphics Books' handsome Complete Peanuts series includes a foreword by Matt Groening and a Charles M. Schulz retrospective by Gary Groth. --David Horiuchi

From Booklist

The uniform hardcover series reprinting all 50 years of the classic comic strip Peanuts continues. Many ingredients that would sustain the strip for a half-century are already in place, from Linus' dependence on his security blanket to Schroeder's rejection of Lucy in favor of Beethoven to Snoopy's efforts to impersonate other species. A few elements on view in this third volume in the series would soon vanish, however, such as Charlie Brown's loudmouthed counterpart, Charlotte Braun. On the other hand, a long-lasting device debuts when Lucy first snatches the football from Charlie Brown's impending kick. Only a few topical references--coonskin caps, Willie Mays, Howdy Doody--betray these strips' age. As Simpsons creator Matt Groening points out in the introduction, "there was nothing cutesy or condescending about the Peanuts gang." These early strips show that as well as timeless humor, it is such melancholic aspects as natural-born fussbudget Lucy's bitterness and Charlie Brown's frustrations over baseball, kites, valentines, and just about everything else he attempts that make them resound to this day. Schulz is a master so he earns five stars by default but there are some things you should know...* These are sadly all black and white, even the Sundays that were printed in color. Luckily, there is a second series of books that contains all the full-color Sundays. Just search for 'Peanuts Every Sunday'* Each volume contains a brief introduction by some famous fan of the strip. They're vaguely interesting but I've never bothered to read any of them all the way through.* If you're crazy anal as I am note that there are two slightly different versions. If you want them all to match on your shelf then take VERY careful note of the exact publisher and edition.* Finally, take careful note of the evolution of the series. The very early strips from the 50s are almost like a totally different strip. If buying for a gift, you might consider one of the later books in the series. Completists will want them all but if the receiver is on the fence then the 50s isn't the place to start.

First, 5 stars for these years of Peanuts. Wonderful stuff. In print, these Fantagraphics editions are a joy. However, on a Kindle Keyboard (using the default reading mode), the art is fuzzy. It's perfectly readable, but not sharp. The fuzziness can be fixed on the daily strips if you don't mind the inconvenience of switching from "fit-to-screen" to "actual size." The "actual size" panels are sharp because they're meant to be shown at half the size of the screen. The inconvenience of this solution comes with the Sunday comics, where "actual size" cuts off the right side of every first panel. Shall I switch back to "fit-to-screen" for one panel, and interrupt my reading? Arrgh — fuzziness! Yet if I switch to "actual size," the other panels of the Sunday strips are still fuzzy. Sigh.I'm disappointed that the Kindle version is not more crisp — I bought this in order to study and enjoy each panel of Charles Schulz's work closely. However, I'm very glad to have such a portable and complete edition of Peanuts. Hence, 3 stars: an okay edition that I hope is improved someday.(On a side note about Kindle comics, it annoys me that I can't use bookmarks. In a comic like this with hundreds of pages, bookmarks would be very welcome.)

When I read the comics page in the newspaper, I find some good strips and some bad ones. Often the most annoying are what I call "institutional" strips: they haven't been funny in years or even decades, but they've become institutions and no one is willing to get rid of them. Peanuts, however, was always something of an exception: it was an institution, but it remained decent, even if in later years it was not quite the same caliber as it once was. There's a reason that modern comic artists (for example, Matt Groening in this volume) write glowingly about Peanuts; it was good. I doubt there is similar appreciation for Marmaduke, Heathcliff or Momma. The comic strips in this volume are fifty years old, yet with limited exceptions (such as references to Davy Crockett hats), they fit just as well today. Some of the characters have disappeared over the years: what every happened to Patty, Violet or Shermy (or the loud-talking Charlotte Braun)? Other characters have yet to appear, significantly Peppermint Patty, Woodstock and Sally. But the core characters are here in this book, with their identities still evolving.Snoopy is beginning to develop his alternate identities, practicing with being various animals (pythons, alligators, etc.) which will (in future volumes) develop into full-blown alternate personalities such as Joe Cool and the World War I Flying Ace ("Curse you, Red Baron!"). Lucy is a world-class fussbudget filled with incorrect information that she loves to impart to others. Linus still has his bursts of childishness, but is showing the signs of his budding genius, able to erect massive snow forts and blow up square balloons. In the end, however, it is Charlie Brown who is the centerpiece of this comic, the ultimate hard luck character who the world seems to conspire against; the other kids often treat him poorly and even things like kite-flying go awry when he does it. It is the Lucy-Charlie Brown relationship that causes the most aggravation for our hero; a typical series of strips will have Lucy debating an issue with him and instantly changing the subject as soon as she is proven wrong.Deceptively simple in their presentation, the Peanuts strips actually is filled with dark humor and angst. Yes, the only characters are kids (and a dog), but Schulz never relies on cuteness. Both fun and funny, this is a worthwhile read for both children and adults.

I love the Peanuts and early Snoopy is dope. Schulz expresses so much in so few lines, it's nicely abstracted and iconic, and the stories are nearly always entertaining and funny... although dated just as often as they aren't. Plus it's a more interesting way to while away the otherwise idle minute than watching cat videos...

Stay away from Vol. 3 on Kindle. It's heavily cropped and can't be viewed in landscape (the portrait mode is just shrunk to fit landscape vertically, making it even smaller and illegible?!). I'm so dissapointed in this after enjoying the first two volumes in landscape mode, which was very comfortable. I don't understand why the publisher would change the formatting to this. I won't be buying anymore of these on Kindle for fear of the same issue. $20 wasted.

About the Author

Bill Cadwallader, MBA, EMRS is a Certified Electromagnetic Radiation Specialist. Bill measures electromagnetic radiation and consults for detection, protection, and solutions in homes, schools, businesses, and other environments. Bill, an author and accomplished speaker, has spent his adult life working around technology, from the time he joined the U.S. Marine Corps until he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel (Reserves), as a postgraduate student at Pepperdine University, as a Project Manager in the Aerospace Industry in California, as well as working in the Information Technology Department for Clark County, Nevada. Bill has presented at the Annual Cancer Convention in Los Angeles and has taught at the International Institute for Building-Biology & Ecology (IBE). He serves as a coach for IBE’s Apprentice Program. He also speaks extensively on solutions to harmful electromagnetic radiation. Before becoming a consultant in the field of electromagnetic radiation, Bill was concerned about the amount of radiation he and others were being exposed to in their daily lives. When a co-worker was diagnosed with brain cancer, Bill was shocked. He recalled that he always saw his co-worker on his cell phone, before meetings and after meetings, in the parking lot, walking down the hall. The brain tumor was located at the exact place where the man held his cell phone. The man later died, in spite of massive medical treatment, leaving a wife, who had become a widow, and seven fatherless children. Bill realized that the way we use our cell phones and other electronic devices may produce harmful side effects. After another acquaintance developed a tumor in his abdomen, right where he held his tablet computer every night while reading in bed, Bill knew he had to do something. As a Certified Electromagnetic Radiation Specialist, Bill has completed advanced studies in electromagnetic radiation. Since then, he formed the consulting firm Stop Dirty Electricity. At Stop Dirty Electricity, he detects and reduces the electromagnetic radiation threats to your workplace, school, and home—your family, children, and even your pets. Bill holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from Cal Poly Pomona, in Pomona, California, and a Master’s Degree from Pepperdine University, in Malibu, California. He was born and raised in Bakersfield, California, and now lives in Las Vegas, Nevada, with his wife, Lois.

Are cell phones and other radio-frequency (RF) technologies and products (WiFi, Bluetooth, “smart” devices) the tobacco of the digital age? Sadly, as with tobacco products and a number of other toxins — not to mention climate change — we may only acknowledge the truth after thousands of unsuspecting consumers die or suffer catastrophic illnesses because they accepted industry propaganda and government/political complacency (or complicity) as a means of rationalizing risky behavior. In EXPOSED, Bill and Lois Cadwallader have laid out a history of lax oversight by government agencies and argue that history is repeating itself in terms of the safety of cell phones and related devices, saying — nay, shouting — that consumers need to educate themselves and take preventive action. The Cadwalladers do not say you must give up your precious and convenient smartphones, tablets, and the onslaught of “smart” appliances coming with the rollout of 5G telecommunications networks. They offer sensible solutions for protecting yourself, your loved ones, and, especially, the most vulnerable—your children. The authors are not lone wolves in this—they cite hundreds of references that point to studies and court cases that back them up, as well as countries around the world that are taking action to protect unsuspecting consumers from themselves and, perhaps, a looming epidemic of health problems directly attributable to exposure to RF, electromagnetic fields (EMR) and electromagnetic radiation (EMR).As they point out (and, again, as with tobacco), the harmful effects of exposure to electromagnetic radiation are not immediately apparent; however, the effects are cumulative and compound over time. How much time? No one know for certain, but some researchers suggest that within 10-15 years we will begin feeling the impact of harmful effects of daily exposure to EMR. And this will only get worse with the rollout of 5G and nearly ubiquitous exposure to radio waves and EMR, whether you use the devices or not. Scoff, if you will, but don’t say you weren’t warned.

For so many years, (decades), I have been hearing about the dangers of cell phone use but, I sort of wrote it off as a necessary evil. Fast forward to the present, I see more and more family and friends dying from cancer at younger and younger ages and I realize it is not just cell phones, it is the supercharged, ultra-convenient world in which we live that is hazardous. It now has my full attention but honestly, until now, I felt at a loss for what to do. This book is packed with good information, practical application and is written in a way that is engaging and easy to read. He does a wonderful job explaining things at a level that is understandable. If you are looking for research and facts, I don't think I have ever read such a heavily referenced book! In my opinion, this is a life or death issue and we are getting closer to a tipping point. I think EVERYONE should read this book. Heads up to my family members... this book is now on your Christmas gift list. If you take away just a fraction of the advice given in this book, you are helping to reduce your radiation exposure.

Rachel Carson's SILENT SPRING warned us of the damage insecticides, particularly DDT, were doing to millions of seabirds and mammals and led to worldwide changes in how we dealt with our ecosystems. Unseen yet deadly. And now, Bill Cadwallader's book, EXPOSED, explores the unseen dangers of Electromagnetic Radiation found everywhere in our homes and workplace. Of particular importance is the cell phone and related technologies which plays a role in nearly all aspects of our lives today. Mr. Cadwallader documents numerous case studies and research which links EMR to cancer and other illnesses. He also explores the government and industry collusion to keeps the health facts from the public and supports all of his work with hundreds of references. The last portion of the book provides easy and reasonable ways the we can reduce our health risks. EXPOSED is an easy read, well researched and referenced. I would recommend this book to everyone who has a cell phone and lives with electrical devices! Be aware!

I like the fact that this book provides easy solutions that are doable. I can see myself taking some of the actions the author suggests.

This book has been very helpful on our journey of cleaning up the EMF's in our home. The author has also been of tremendous help to me and my family, providing private consultations. The book presents the information simply and clearly and offers simple solutions. When I first started researching this topic, I was overwhelmed and anxious about how to tackle the immensity of this problem. With Bill's book, I feel better, I know that I am doing all that I can to improve and protect our health from EMF's in our home. I have recommended this book to several people and hope that the word spreads about this huge health hazard. Thank you Bill, you have helped us so much!

This subject frightens me so much that I have simply avoided researching it. But Bill Cadwallader writes in a friendly and knowledgeable way, and he gives us practical ideas of how to cope with the issue of electromagnetic radiation. I know this is a resource I will refer to often.

I highly recommend Bill! He is a certified electromagnetic radiation specialist with a BS and Master's Degree and is a former Marine, presenter at the Annual Cancer Convention and has taught at the International Institute for Building-Biology & Ecology. He is extremely kind, patient, and "in-the-know". Check out his facebook page and website: stopdirtyelectricity.com. Check out this book "EXPOSED: The Electronic Sickening of America and How to Protect Yourself" (on Amazon). It is really easy to read and understand and covers all the bases. I've recently hired Bill to consult with me and I'm learning so much. , I give Bill an A+++! THANK YOU SO MUCH BILL!!!!

Carola Koenig is an expert on Lympholog. I highly value her research and personal experience on this subject.

I was hoping for some science, and there is some. I was hoping for techniques and methods, and there is some. I was hoping for specific insights on the respiratory lymphatic system, and there isn't much. But worthy of a cover2cover read, as there is much that I didn't know.

My grandson loved this and especially because he got it on his 6th birthday. It made him feel special. It is easy to read for him and he understands the silly jokes. I love this book!

Just gave this to my (almost) 6yr. old grandson. He LOVES it! Lol...I think my daughter's mad at me now as he won't put it down! Oh well, payback time! Lol

Loved the book! I’ve gotten one for each of my grandchildren as soon as they able to tell/understand the concept of puns and jokes. It seriously upped the quality of their jokes as well as encouraged them to read and deliver the jokes.

My grandson loved it so much he took it to school.

There is nothing funny in this joke book for 6 yr old, these jokes are dumb, stupid, worth nothing, a child will not be entertained by any of them, and certainly will not remember any of these jokes to pass them on. This book is a totalwaste of money and effort. Don't bother buying it. Cover is the only funny thing of this book.

My 6 year old niece absolutely loves this book! It’s easy to read and the way the jokes are laid out makes it easy for her to tell the set up from the punchline. I gave her this book at a family Christmas party last weekend. We asked her to tell a couple and she was off! Her delivery was perfect and her giggles after reading the punchlines kept us all laughing. I would definitely buy again.

Bought two for our 6 year old grandies. Such a delightful collection!

My 6 year old son really likes the jokes!

Rethinking the Power of Maps

Review

"A captivating contribution to our understanding of maps and mapping practice. Wood offers a broad canvas of maps, map makers, and map users, linking traditional cartographies to exciting new experiments. He explores the ways in which, as maps make propositions about the world, they shape how we understand and live in it. This is a book you cannot put down and one that demands to be read in one or two sittings. It may be the best book on maps and mapping I have read."--John Pickles, Earl N. Phillips Distinguished Professor of International Studies and Chair, Department of Geography, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill"In an age when mapping is sexy again, Wood explains why it should matter to everyone, how maps came to be deployed by states, and how the authority of the image is now being used by many different voices. This is a passionate humanist argument for a critical approach to mapping, strongly academic but reassuringly accessible. Wood’s work always challenges; the style and panache of his scholarship carry the reader along and persuade us to listen to his original ideas. Mapping and counter-mapping are brought together for the first time. Researchers and students across the social sciences, and indeed from all disciplines, should read this book and take its lessons to heart!"--Chris Perkins, Senior Lecturer, Geography, University of Manchester, United Kingdom "Rethinking the Power of Maps sharpens the argument of Wood's earlier work and focuses its attention on the construction of power. Every student of cartography should take notice."--Nicholas Chrisman, Department of Geomatic Sciences, Université Laval, Québec, Canada "It is hard to dispute the quality of the writing and comprehensiveness of this volume. Readers will struggle to put the book down as they are led through Wood's wide-ranging critique of maps and mapmaking. It is sufficiently detailed for specialists, whilst remaining accessible to enthusiasts....Provides one of the most interesting histories of cartography and mapping that I have read....An important contribution; the arguments Wood presents are compelling, and made more so by his writing style. In an era when maps are ubiquitous, disposable, and can be created by more people than ever, Wood's insights are of increasing importance. I therefore highly recommend this book to anyone with a personal or professional interest in maps or mapmaking." (Environment and Planning B: Planning and Design 2010-04-18)"Besides chronicling [the] power and agency of maps with numerous historical and contemporary accounts, Rethinking the Power of Maps contains a brilliantly written, major case study, the mapping and counter-mapping and counter-over-mapping of Palestine." Maps are my thing and I always appreciate an in-depth book on the subject. However, in the case of this book, I felt that I couldn't get a clear focus on the main points the author wished to make. Maybe it's just me, be I was left feeling confused.

Today they are scribbled on the back of business cards, delivered with admonitions by our GPS, or arrive on our desktop from Mappy or Google. Most of us, if we reflect on maps at all, are likely to think of them as aids for getting from one place to another without getting lost, happy not to risk roadway suicide refolding their bed sheet-sized ancestors to fit the glove compartment! In the newspaper or on the Internet maps may also seem to be easy ways to digest data, viz., the red/blue state maps used to explain the 2008 US elections or tracking the spread of influenza. However, Denis Wood's sequel to The Power of Maps, takes us far, far deeper into the substratum of how we come to have and use these tools. It examines the assumptions we make about them and their import for both local and global communities.Wood subjects what we call "a map" to a strict historical scrutiny. At least in the West, maps are with few exceptions a product of the age of nation building. To quote the author, "The things we recognize as maps gained currency only in the last 400 years or so and within this period only in relatively stable states with entrenched, centralized bureaucracies and well-established academies." In truth, far from being passive reflections of geography, maps help construct the state as we know it.How does this work? Drawing boundaries and naming places are ways of affirming the existence of a state and its reach. The resulting maps, then, both affirm and are affirmed by the authority of the state. The existence of the map offered a sense of identity to both the population within and a claim of proprietorship against those without. Maps are used to tell us that "things are," and that they are "there." At their absolute worst, as history shows, they often give legitimacy, if not a sense of absolute righteousness, to engaging in seizure and genocide.Maps are not passive pieces of paper or pixels on your computer screen that they at first seem to be. While they present themselves as simply representing facts of nature and society, maps, whether gerrymandering local voting or school districts or staking a claim to territory, are in fact propositions supporting both local and geopolitical agendas in search of acceptance.Besides chronicling this power and agency of maps with numerous historical and contemporary accounts, Rethinking the Power of Maps contains a brilliantly written, major case study, the mapping and counter-mapping and counter-counter-mapping of Palestine. The focal point of this history is the claim to existence of the State of Israel and propositions as to its geographical reach. I started reading the book from the beginning, but found the cartographic language a bit daunting, so followed the author's suggestion of jumping to this illustrative chapter, whose story line and impact helped me make much better sense of the rest.Maps share in the power of culture, in which the making of maps has in fact become a part. They are social constructs shaping our reality. They operate like the most influential levels of culture, those that speak to us from below the waterline of consciousness about what we should believe to be real and meaningful. Maps easily close our minds and eyes to conflicting or competing realities that might challenge implanted values and attitudes. Whether justifying contemporary Israeli expansion or motivating the century long march of the "Manifest Destiny" of the white man in America, maps ease the conscience of both their creators and users. Who can argue with "what is?" Here as well as elsewhere rapacious abstraction has the power to gnaw at our humanity.Beyond tracking the basic story of the development of mapping and its purposes, Wood explores the impact of the legend and symbols and colors used in designing maps, what they tell us and what they hide, as well as how they advertise. The incisiveness and precision with which he examines elements that we take for granted on maps is at once a sociological and epistemological analysis of the minds of both makers and end users of maps. It explains the results of the employing them and gives us clues to the interpreting the language and codes they embody.Maps are about relationships, how one landscape or feature of what is being measured and presented relates to or elbows another aside in the style of presentation, relative size and importance. Far from innocent notes and symbols, the legend placed on maps (or its absence), too, inevitably bear intentionality. Though we might generally agree that even the most lavishly illustrated menu is not the meal, when it comes to maps, we are far less likely to disentangle reality from its representation by the cartographer or fathom the intentions of his or her patrons.Given the political, military, financial and social influences behind the creation and use of maps, it is not surprising that elevated consciousness about their actual sources, origins and nature would result in resistance to propositions they espouse. Inevitably this leads to counter-mapping as an expression of criticism and protest.Wood looks at the rise and fall of cartography as a scholarly discipline, both in the making and classification of maps. He points to a decline of sustainability in this academic venture, due to both internal and external criticism and the fact that technological tools are democratizing the ability to make maps. He provides numerous examples of "home grown" mapmaking taking on a life of its own, embodying both artistic elegance and a sense of affection for the places in people lives.Google, the blabbing GPS, et al, are now automating the past intentions and assumptions of mapmakers. Recognizing this, Wood becomes an unabashed advocate of "talking back to the map" and, in a populist sense, "taking back the map." This perspective and tone resonates through the entire the book, but is most explicit in Chapters 5 to 7 where alternative propositions, everything from activist criticism to Dada map art are explored. Wood argues that we need to get beyond the fictive "public participation" that is often championed with a political agenda of balancing support and interests for projects if we are to enter into real democratization of maps.Rethinking the Power of Maps, is not an easy read, but an eye opening one. The language can be daunting even for US English speakers, not just in the use of vocabulary but in the broadness of the conceptual frame--I read it with my browser open to Wikipedia. The end notes are a copious resource not only listing and explaining references but providing additional commentary on the part of the author that would have overburdened the text.In sum, I can do no better than quote from the first pages of the book: "Maps are engines that convert social energy into social work," whose outputs include the framing of social space, social order, and social knowledge.

We take maps for granted, but this book explains how maps can misinform as well as inform. In fact, the very nature of a map has to include some misinformation. It requires an informed and ethical person to present as honest a map as possible and not allow their bias to control its production.
