This was a fantastic read for a couple reasons.I loved how you interviewed all the professionals who you know are the best and wrote about what they did. You portrayed their backgrounds and asked them fantastic questions... As a kid who is about to graduate college, I swallowed up their advice and using it.I actually reached out to someone Rod featured, Tim Strange. We have got on Skype together and I learned a little bit more about which direction I should head coming out of college. I think he will end up becoming a good mentor. This book taught me a lot about being a broker and how to become successful doing so.

It's easy to get caught up in the day to day of industrial real estate brokerage. I've had a successful career but this book is exactly what I needed to push it to the next level.

Besides luck there are 2 ways to achieve success. You can figure it out yourself, often through trial and error, or you can find someone else who has already accomplished what it is you are trying to accomplish and do what they did. Both require hard work, however, the second method is much easier and faster. Brokers Who Dominate is full of ideas and strategies of top producers in the commercial real estate industry. You can take these ideas and strategies and make them your own. Chances are you may even find yourself in one of the many broker stories in this book. And it is and enjoyable read.

This book is more about finding the reference points and at large practices top producers utilize to remain on top. This isn't a nuts and bolts instruction manual and I believe was never intended as such.The author does a terrific job in succinctly cutting to the root of the matter and delivering essential top performance insights from those in the industry who sit atop the brokerage business.

Anja Grebe teaches art history at the University of Erlangen- Nuremberg/Germany. She is taking part in numerous international research projects and exhibitions and has published extensively on medieval and modern art history. Grebe is the author of The Louvre: All the Paintings and The Vatican: All the Paintings. She lives in Erlangen, Germany.Erich Lessing has been documenting the culture and fine arts of Europe and the Near East for more than fifty years. He is arguably today's leading independent photographer of the arts in the Western World. He created the Erich Lessing Culture and Fine Arts Archive which is an extensive image library featuring over 40,000 high resolution images from over 500 museums and private collections throughout the world, including a thorough coverage of such institutions as: The Louvre and the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the Uffizi in Florence, the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan, the Prado in Madrid, and many more. Having worked as a photographer all over the world for more than six decades, he has published more than 40 books with his art photography. He lives in Vienna and travels regularly to Paris and other art capitals of the world.Henri Loyrette has been the President and Director of the Musée du Louvre since April 2001. Photos are so small, dvd photos are small and its slow to navigate. I get that there are just too many paintings to thoroughly cover all the works but the photos are so small! I would consider it more of a book of thumbnails. I had hoped that the dvd would give me access to better quality, larger photos than the website but it does not. If you're a fan of art, check out the Museo del Prado's excellent online collection.

I bought the book and DVD because my husband and I hadn't been able to visit the Louvre in our recent short trip to Paris. Even though I already had two large art books on the Louvre, I thought that this would be a great way to see the paintings that I had missed. The book itself is excellent; it is the DVD that I have major problems with. The disk claims to be a DVD which means that it should hold a little over 4 GB of data. This theoretical DVD only holds 228 MB of data including the software program which doesn't work very well for viewing the images; a CD holds almost 700 MB of data. The images on the DVD total 194 MB, and half of those 6,753 items are extremely small thumbnails. The largest image is 2,194 KB. I expected to get a DVD with relatively high quality images of the paintings and was extremely disappointed with what I received. Whoever put this DVD and software program together should be ashamed of themselves.

A collection of great art works, unfortunately many are reproduced here in very small versions, and even the accompanying CD has the same small pictures. Maybe it's just me, but I couldn't figure out how to enlarge them on my screen. I bought this for my artist significant other, just sits on the shelf in her studio.

A huge book with thousands of paintings. You definitely get your bang for the buck. The quality of the printings is mediocre, good enough for flipping through but not enough for closer study. For a general reader like myself, the descriptions attached to the paintings are informative but somewhat on the cut-and-dry side. I wish they were "juicier" although that is purely personal preference. Very happy I've purchased the book.

What can we say about the Louvre; it contains some of the greatest works of art in human history. Having had the great fortune of viewing quite a number of these paintings firsthand in the Louvre, I was extremely pleased to see that ALL the paintings in this grand treasure-trove were finally released. The main reason being, that I had seen works there that never seemed to appear in other art books, and memories alone cannot restore the original in detail in the mind’s eye, hence it cannot satiate one’s various reasons for being drawn to a particular work, be it for its aesthetic charm, psychological impact, creativity, color scheme, composition, etc. One such work was “The Young Martyr,” by Paul Delaroche.However, that example brings to light the main drawback of this ambitious volume. The image is sadly minuscule, as are the majority of artworks reproduced. I cannot fault the publisher too harshly, however, for these reasons. First, the huge number of works that the Louvre contains cannot be presented in one volume any other way. Second, if they did make this a multi-volume edition, it would have been too expensive for many people. Third, making this single volume gives people who never had, or will have, the chance to visit the Louvre a complete representation of their art treasures, all at a very reasonable price. Fourth, many art books aimed at the broad public have extremely poor color reproductions, some being an absolute insult to the artist and the art world. And while this edition does not boast the highest quality available, it nevertheless is “good,” especially considering the amount of works presented in this massive volume.Being an artist/author myself, I find the ability to open this book in the comfort of a favorite chair or sofa a great relief, sparing my eyes from the glare of a computer screen. This, again, brings to light another issue; namely that of the accompanying DVD. The images are likewise minuscule, and not worth the effort or strain.Nevertheless, the robust catalog that this edition boasts affords the professional or layman the ability to study lesser known artists and their works, thus broadening one’s knowledge and clarifying one’s vision about the exchange of ideas, from artist to artist, or from one school to another, and acquiring a better understanding of the chronological timeline of how tastes, influences and priorities change.As such, despite its flaws, for the price, it is a great addition to my library, and a book that anyone can pick up to gain pleasure from, or be inspired by one of the small images within to research an artist further elsewhere. But the wealth of artistic genius within this hefty tome is worth the sacrifices, as such, it is highly recommended for art lovers or art students interested in art history.

This is a magnificent and beautiful collection of perhaps the most important art museum in the world. It is a superb accomplishment to gather the whole entire collection of the Louvre. Alas, I can't give it five stars since I soon found out that most of the works are shown in small pictures. Lots of little pictures! I don't regret I bought it but I feel I must really tell you how I feel. Ultimately I am happy is in my library.

Some people have complained about the size of the paintings but there are plenty of large photos, all in color and the smaller ones are still big enough to see clearly. This is, after all, the entire collection of the Louvre, which is a massive undertaking and I think they did a good job.

This book is a monster in size and weight, but well worth the price if this sort of thing is your bag. I visited the Louvre a month before purchase, and will be much better informed about particular paintings the next time I go. The photography is well done, and the descriptions are informative.

i own all of Vance's sci fi novels, and probably a dozen GURPS game books. This one was a great read - as always with GURPS you have to wonder how often the gamebooks turn into actual games, but with this one I will say that if i ever get the opportunity to play it i will jump at the chance. The one caveat is that per Vance's request as a concession to the limeys the name "Wankh" became the "Wannek" in this game book, which is a little strange to a longtime reader of the original yankee version of the novels but easily ignored. Otherwise the game book is true to the novels, and provides a wonderful gazetteer of Tschai. The adventure ideas are good, and the game play is typical GURPS (which is to say, fairly easy to understand and seems easy to play - but the book is worth a buy/read even if you never play it). All in all a great read for any fan of the novels. EDIT: So years after I bought this, I have to say that it has really great artwork too. I can't read the novels without imagining the alien races looking exactly like they are depicted in this book, and I find myself pulling it out all the time when I start thinking about the Pnume, etc. If anyone ever plays it, please invite me! :-)

Fractals were just hitting the popular consciousness when I was in high school. I remember a flurry of pop science books that came out around that time, all of which presented the wonderful fractal images, while nevertheless dancing quite vaguely around the underlying ideas. The questions these mushheaded books immediately provoked in me (i.e. "what does 'self-similar' actually MEAN?" and "is complexity an objective quality or in the eye of the beholder?) were left totally unanswered. In my high school, these books (and the fractal posters, key-chains, videos, water-pipes...) commanded the attention of an intellectually philistine (and usually highly-intoxicated) crowd. People who use "party" as a verb. This "whoa dude-it's a fractal" factor was so powerful that it left the whole topic kind of disreputable in my book...until now.This,too, is a "pop" science book, after a fashion, but unlike those other fractal books, the authors here refuse to dumb the subject down to a mere collection of pretty pictures. There is enough detail here to permit a diligent reader to truly understand the logic behind fractal geometry. If you can grasp the math, the basics are here. If, like me, you are a "liberal arts" type, the concepts are also explained in precise English.The content of the video is similarly excellent. The interviews with Benoit Mandelbrot and Stephen Hawking are very cool indeed, but my favorite part is when Arthur C. Clarke states that, while he doesn't know about this PERSONALLY, "the ingestion of certain illegal substances produces fractal visions." Clad in his trademark blue utility shirt, and with a perfectly straight face, Clarke goes on to note the similarity between the words "Mandelbrot" and "Mandala." (Whoa, dude!)Unfortunately, the video itself (i.e. formally, visually) is pretty dated. It seems to have been made for VHS, and has not been cleaned up for the DVD release at all. The colors are bled, and the titles look like they were made on a Commodore 64. The fractal images are quite low-resolution, which is unfortunate, since fractals are one topic for which high resolution would seem particularly essential. (Then again, NO level of resolution would really be sufficient.) This video is just begging to be remastered. With contemporary high-def video and computer technology it would be absolutely jaw-dropping. Still, this is totally worth it.

I agree with pretty much all the other reviewers here. As a novice to fractals (I am 50 years old, but never could get into math...), I found the book most satisfyingly informative without, as another reviewer put it, dumbing down the concepts. I also liked the anthology approach, with authors in different specialties writing the different chapters. Yes the DVD is of pretty poor quality (probably made worse by watching in on a high-rez monitor?), but it is more than 20 years old--and made for TV.It should be emphasized that this book is NOT a reissue. It was produced specifically for the TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY of the video documentary's release. The book is, indeed, published in 2004 and the accompanying color plates are suitably gorgeous. I watched the DVD first and recommend other people new to fractals do so. Much of the book repeats or is an expansion of what's on the DVD, but rather than seeming repetitive, it made the topic more comfortably familiar to me as I got into reading the more scientifically specific explanations. The writers/interviewees were all impressively warm and personable as well as infectiously enthusiastic about their subject. Like Carl Sagan and astronomy, books like this are great PR for science and math. Live appearances by Arthur C. Clarke were particularly poignant, given that he just died last month.

Depending upon one's education, it is possible to gain either an art appreciation of the fractal geometry of the Mandelbott Set or a realization of how all life is ordered and the universe structured. Life most certainly would exist somewhere out there and it would resemble what we have here on Earth. While viewing it, I felt that this was at least fifty percent of the riddle of the universe explained in at least its basis. The other fifty percent would be what Stephen Hawkin called the other formulae that will reverse this one. He hopes we will find this one before it begins to act in its turn. That would mark the collapse of the universe and he seems to think that we might prevent that. But the collapse may be inevitable and part of the eternal operation of two formulae.The Mystery remains; was this ordered and if so, by whom or what? We may never know, but for this devastating mystery, we have David Gilmour's compelling score to propel us along through an eternal race toward infinity.My only complaint is that the film needs re-mastering so that the fractal geometry can be expressed better. Ironic that the documentary that defines the detail of the universe is so fuzzy! Also, there is a second section of fractal art expression on the DVD that will only play on a computer. That ought to be fixed. I think it is fitting that Arthur C. Clarke is the narrator for this film, so I hope this original can be cleaned up and not trashed for an updated version with all new presentation and cast.This documentary should be shown in all high-school science classes. In fact, I think it ought to be shown to everyone regardless of partticipation in science curriculum because it also assists the refinement of questions like evolution and religion.
