Oblivion

From Publishers Weekly

Lebedev's debut novel evokes, in powerful poetic prose, the Soviet prison work camps of the Arctic north, posing a heartfelt challenge to those who prefer to forget. Like the author, the novel's unnamed narrator is a Russian geologist with a passion for words. The story follows his attempt to uncover the past of an old blind neighbor he calls Grandfather II. No one knows much about Grandfather II, who keeps mostly to himself, his deep attachment to the narrator one notable exception. When, as a boy, the narrator balks at his first haircut, Grandfather II takes charge of the scissors. When the boy encounters a frothing dog, Grandfather II beats it with his cane. When the boy needs a transfusion, Grandfather II gives his blood. After Grandfather II dies, the narrator finds a letter that prompts a journey to Siberia, where he observes cold white expanses scarred by logged forests, used-up mines, deserted barracks, neglected roads, abandoned vehicles. Grandfather II's past is rooted in this landscape: he played a key role at a prison camp quarry. The narrator facing the facts of Grandpa II's life serves as a metaphor for Russians dealing with their sullied heritage. The determination of Kulak laborers, the desperation of a fugitive prisoner, the desolation of an empty library, the tragedy of a boy and his whistle, are among the many images capturing the impoverished state of the land, the people, and the national spirit, left by an unjust and undeniable part of Russian history. Wall Street Journal Top 10 Novel of 2016 and 2017 Best Translated Book Award finalist"A Dantean descent ... In a steely translation by Antonina W. My view of this book differs from those who have previously posted. I love Chekhov, have read some Tolstoy and Turgenev, but I'm not an expert or maybe even a fan of Russian literature. My idea of a good time is Lydia Davis's translation of Proust, the first chapters of Joyce's Ulysses, and Virginia Woolf. So read this review with my prejudices in mind. This book is first and foremost an original work of art; I've read nothing like it before. But that doesn't mean I like it. I found the first 100 pages of this novel difficult to get through, alternating between thinking Lebedev was a genius or merely tedious. These pages were dense with language, sometimes abstract, often abstruse. I couldn't tell if the abstruseness was a result of the Russian language, the translation, or a personal vision drenched in the northern landscape. The story gradually sinks into its own language, falls in love with it and drowns in it, and the author's natural bent for surrealism or dream imagery takes over. The last fifty pages were for me cold and repellent. To be fair, that's what the author wanted to produce.BELOW IS A PARODY OF MR. LEBEDEV'S STYLE--which some readers will object to. It is easy, they will say, to parody a writer than to create an original work of art. That's absolutely right. As I came closer to the pump house I saw that its contours were not fixed by its walls but by some kind of air, a compressed thickening of oxygen, a thousand attenuated sighs or ejaculations of suprise from those who were no longer there—perhaps never had been there—but who had left their essence behind in tracings that refined the boredom of an institution which had ceased to function and was only now allowing the dead to pursue their own ends, quietly, without guilt or joy, speaking of the water that in winter, in the deep aloneness of that place, flooded a dimly lit office where both the old stamps and the stamped documents had been archived as if in the dark gullet of the Stalinist bureaucracy, looked after by one old man whom I knew from the dacha, an apple grower who left the apples on the trees so that in autumn the thudding fruit fell onto the earth like iron, and our bones our very eyes were sluiced by the lost and forgotten past which rose like smoke from the glue factory.

Astonishing insight the lived experience of 20th-century Russia. Deeply moving work.

Beautiful prose. The crush of an authoritarian state on its people making them inhuman in almost all, but not all ways.

Harrowing. Unforgettable.

I want to thank the publisher and the Goodreads Giveaway program for sending me this book in return for an honest review. I give this book 3.5 stars(rounded up to 4) out of 5.This was a book overwhelmed with imagery. Much of the book takes place in dream sequences or in the narrator's mind. The premise of the book is the narrator trying to find out more about the man he knew as "Grandfather II." This man was not his actual grandfather, but did watch over him as he grew up. "Grandfather II" dies and leaves the narrator his small house and everything in it. He finds some letters and decides to find the man who wrote the letters. His quest leads him into the remains of former Soviet gulags. Some examples of imagery: "He sought it in questions--he must have heard not only the words but also how they bumped into one another, head on or obliquely...""The objects stood there, huddled in bunches like sheep without a shepherd."I took a long time to read this book, starting it on Feb 16, reading it for 6 days, then putting it aside until March 19 and finishing it on March 23.The translation was excellent.

This is an incredible novel - I'm a big fan of Russian literature, have read all the classics and the best contemporary writers, too. Lebedev takes his place in the pantheon with this moving, suspenseful, and beautifully written novel about a man on a mystifying search to discover himself, his past, and his country. The history that's woven so effortlessly into this book is terrible, yet so gorgeously written. It reminded me of the movie Leviathan - that sort of stark natural landscape, the grayness, the sinister backdrop.

up there with solzhenitsyn and shalamov as one of the great books on the soviet century. and the prose itself is a delight - a rare treat to read such gorgeous and well-crafted writing.

As a civil engineering student I was required to purchase this book and I wasn't about to pay the $300 at my university's bookstore so I settled for the kindle version instead costing $153 at the time. As an ebook it was easy enough to work with from a computer or iPad and I will most certainly reference it in future subjects. The hardcover version which most students splurged on was of a surprising smaller size then expected given the depth of the subject, yet the quality makes up for the quantity mostly I guess. It is set up incredibly well with beautiful illustrations that show engineering as the art form it truly is and the examples are extraordinarily useful; however, one or two additional problems in each chapter could have helped silidify some of the later topics. Unfortunately like with any advanced math or engineering textbook the occasional error was found in the book's solutions which was rather concerning. Hopefully they take greater care with the next edition to prevent these mistakes because engineers need to know how to properly design a bridge or any structure without error.

This book is great help, unfortunately it doesn't have a lot of indepth examples for the subject, but it will teach the basics and intermediate methods.

I already rated the CD that comes with the book in accident instead of the book so I will keep this short. This book is a must have for civil/structural majors. I bought it in undergrad, kept it after the classes I used it for were over and know I use it for review or reference in my grad classes. Love this book. It's very simple to read, good intro to structural analysis and great reference for when you need to remember a specific analysis method. Structural students buy this book and keep it.

I had to buy this for a class, but now that I'm out of school, I find myself going back to reference this book all the time.

This is an excellent reference for structural engineers. It contains many basic methods of beam and frame analysis. It provides the theory behind the methods, the applicable equations, and goes through several examples on each topic. It's also very affordable if you pick up a used copy.

As the author Hibbler does in all of his textbooks, there is little to no explanation surrounding the theory of the topics. 20% of the textbook is explanation of the topics, while the rest of the textbook contains examples and problems. Many of the problems are much more complex than the examples given, but if you have a good professor for the class, you should be alright. That being said, Hibbler does a good job of depicting all of the structural analysis methods in a very simple, easy-to-understand way. Therefore if you read this textbook, you will learn a lot, especially simple and short cut ways to solve structural analysis problems.

This book is written in a format that is easy to follow and understand, examples are plenty and explained well. Includes plenty of problems to work through; this is one of the few books were I can't say that the problems are much harder/different than the given examples because the basic fundamentals and steps applied to an example will solve any problem in the chapter.

I bought this book for school. It is an older edition but was financially a better choice. The books spine shows a little wear but the pages are fine and it was received promptly.

A still-present cultural and linguistic group, the Persians are the founders of today’s modern-day nation of Iran. They trace their roots back to the Aryans of Northern Europe, but over the course of time, they managed to assert a distinct identity that led to the formation of some of the world’s most powerful empires. One of the most shocking things about the Persians is how quickly they went from an obscure, powerless, and nomadic tribe to an immense empire that spanned across western Asia, Africa, and parts of Europe. The rise of Cyrus the Great, considered the father of Persia, in the 7th century BCE, filled the power vacuum caused by the fall of the Assyrians, and it led to the formation of one of the most powerful empires of the ancient world. The Persians have made significant contributions to world culture, ranging from their ability to raise and train one of the ancient world’s most formidable fighting forces, the Persian Immortals, to their new and effective ways of organizing and administering government. And Persian art heavily influenced their Muslim invaders, helping to usher in the Islamic Golden Age that helped spread Islam throughout the Middle East and Africa. In The Persian Empire: A Captivating Guide to the History of Persia, Starting from the Ancient Achaemenid, Parthian, and Sassanian Empires to the Safavid, Afsharid, and Qajar Dynasties, you will discover topics such as Who Are the Persians? The History of Human Population in Iran The Birth of the Achaemenid Empire: The Rise and Reign of Cyrus the Great The Glory of the Achaemenid Empire: Cambyses & Darius The Beginning of the End: The Reign of Xerxes and the Downfall of the Achaemenid Dynasty Life in Ancient Persia The Persian Military Zoroastrianism: Persia’s Religion Later Persian Dynasties: The Parthian Empire to the Qajar Dynasty Persian Art: Mixing East and West Persian Contributions to Science and Technology And much, much more!Achaemenid Empire: A Captivating Guide to the First Persian Empire Founded by Cyrus the Great, and How This Empire of Ancient Persia Fought Against the Ancient Greeks in the Greco-Persian WarsSasanian Empire: A Captivating Guide to the Neo-Persian Empire that Ruled Before the Arab Conquest of Persia and the Rise of IslamParthian Empire: A Captivating Guide to the Enemy of the Roman Republic and Roman EmpireThe Safavid Empire: A Captivating Guide to the Persian Empire That Fought Against the Ottomans in the Ottoman–Safavid War

Poor geography, worse English grammar, and pretty superficial.Worth reading, but not worth the price.

I enjoyed this book, I knew about the Persians from studying Rome but since the course was about Rome it did not go into detail about the Persians. This book starts out at their beginnings and how they formed a nation and became powerful. Then it tells about the different dynasties that ruled Persia and its empire and who were the people or nations that they conquered. The book went all the way up to the Ottoman Empire and slightly beyond it. The book ends with Persians achievements in art, medicine, and architecture. Overall it was a very interesting and informative book and I recommend it.

On this book you see the complete history of the Persian Empite. How each new group would take over the previous one & make improvements. Lasted for such a long time and it’s contributions are still being seen today!Super job of research by Captivating History!

I really liked this book because it was about one of many of the empires from that time in Middle East. That time was so complex this gave a good overview of the Persian empire as it existed over the millennia.

An interesting read about the Persian Empire. You will learn what you don't know or thought that you did know and you didn't.

Interesting read! Not my usual area of interest but loving Ancient History I'm always looking for new things to learn.

Good overview of the Persians for this unfamiliar reader. I liked the parts about Osiris, Darius I, Xerxes, and Darius II.Too bad the Iranians moved away from Zorastorism.

Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness, by Alexandra Fuller

Review

“Electrifying…Writing in shimmering, musical prose… Ms. Fuller manages the difficult feat of writing about her mother and father with love and understanding, while at the same time conveying the terrible human costs of the colonialism they supported… Although Ms. Fuller would move to America with her husband in 1994, her own love for Africa reverberates throughout these pages, making the beauty and hazards of that land searingly real for the reader.” —Michiko Kakutani, THE NEW YORK TIMES “Ten years after publishing Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight: An African Childhood, Alexandra (Bobo) Fuller treats us in this wonderful book to the inside scoop on her glamorous, tragic, indomitable mother…Bobo skillfully weaves together the story of her romantic, doomed family against the background of her mother’s remembered childhood.” —THE WASHINGTON POST “Another stunner… The writer's finesse at handling the element of time is brilliant, as she interweaves near-present-day incidents with stories set in the past. Both are equally vivid… With "Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness" Alexandra Fuller, master memoirist, brings her readers new pleasure. Her mum should be pleased.”   —CLEVELAND PLAIN-DEALER “Fuller's narrative is a love story to Africa and her family. She plumbs her family story with humor, memory, old photographs and a no-nonsense attitude toward family foibles, follies and tragedy. The reader is rewarded with an intimate family story played out against an extraordinary landscape, told with remarkable grace and style.” —MINNEAPOLIS STAR-TRIBUNE “[Fuller] conveys the magnetic pull that Africa could exert on the colonials who had a taste for it, the powerful feeling of attachment. She does not really explain that feeling—she is a writer who shows rather than tells—but through incident and anecdote she makes its effects clear, and its costs.” —THE WALL STREET JOURNAL “[A]n artistic and emotional feat.” —THE BOSTON GLOBE “An eccentric, quixotic and downright dangerous tale with full room for humor, love and more than a few highballs.” —HUFFINGTON POST “Cocktail Hour [Under the Tree of Forgetfulness] subtly explores the intersections of personality, history, and landscape in ways that are continually fresh and thoughtful.” —CHARLESTON POST AND COURIER “Gracefully recounted using family recollections and photos, the author plumbs the narrative with a humane and clear-eyed gaze—a lush story, largely lived within a remarkable place and time.” —KIRKUS REVIEWS “In this sequel to her 2001 memoir, Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight, which her unflattered mum calls the ‘Awful Book,’ Duller gives a warm yet wry account of her British parents’ arduous life in Africa. . . . With searing honesty and in blazingly vibrant prose, Fuller re-creates her mother’s glorified Kenyan girlhood and visits her forever-wild parents at their Zambian banana and fish farm today. The result is an entirely Awesome Book.” —MORE MAGAZINE “Fuller brings Africa to life, both its natural splendor and the harsher realities of day-to-day existence, and sheds light on her parents in all their humanness—not a glaring sort of light, but the soft equatorial kind she so beautifully describes in this memoir.” —BOOKPAGE “Fuller revisits her vibrant, spirited parents, first introduced in Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight (2001), which her mother referred to as that ‘awful book’. . . . This time around, Nicola is well aware her daughter is writing another memoir, and shares some of her memories under the titular Tree of Forgetfulness, which looms large by the elder Fullers’ house in Zambia. Fuller’s prose is so beautiful and so evocative that readers will feel that they, too, are sitting under that tree. A gorgeous tribute to both her parents and the land they love.” —BOOKLIST (starred review) “A sardonic follow-up to her first memoir about growing up in Rhodesia circa the 1970s, Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight, this work traces in wry, poignant fashion the lives of her intrepid British parents. . . . Fuller achieves another beautifully wrought memoir.” —PUBLISHERS WEEKLY (starred review)

While there is, as one critic mentioned, considerable overlap with the author's first book (Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight), I found this one even more fascinating and compelling, with many elements I consider when evaluating a memoir: * It contains lyrical and vivid writing that pulls the reader into the sights, sounds, smells, and emotions of the narrative's places, especially Africa. * It offers an introduction to a world and culture and place that is so utterly foreign to me, I felt as though I had gone on a grand safari myself. * Its character development was both harsh and compassioniate, especially the rendering of the author's mother "Nicola Fuller of Central Africa." * The story provides keen insight into the often unmentioned civilian victims of war. * The narrative explores life's emotional complexities of, and brutalities against, the human heart, yet it moves quickly enough not to become maudlin or mired dark places. * It inspired me to think about how I would react in some of the unspeakably awful circumstances that Nicola Fuller, the author (Nicola's daughter), and others in the family had to face. We judge others at our own peril. * The author's ability to step back far enough to see her family with the eye of an artist and the heart of a loved one impressed me. * The book succeeds, I believe, in conveying why anyone might be willing, against incredible odds, to keep coming back to what must be a very seductive part of the world. Here are some quotes I noted:Speaking of her mother's childhood in Kenya: "It was, in many ways, a charmed and feral childhood."Describing the brutal landscape: "It was toward the end of the long dry season; the wind had been red all day with dust blown in from Uganda and settling on everything like powdered blood, the sun blistered out of a high, clear sky."...and her mother's garden: "an encouraged tangle of bougainvillea and passion fruit vines, beds of lilies and strelitzia, rows of lilac bushes and caladiums looming over borders of impatiens.""War is Africa's perpetual ripe fruit. There is so much injustice to resolve, such desire for revenge in the blood of the people, such crippling corruption of power, such unseemly scramble for the natural resources. The wind of power shifts and there go the fruit again, tumbling toward the ground, each war more inventively terrible than the last."As the author tells the story of her brother's illness and death: "My impuse is impossible: I want to reach back through the years and protect my young parents from what happens next.""Surely until all of us own and honor one another's dead, until we have admitted to our murders and forgiven one another and ourselves for what we have done, there can be no truce, no dignity and no peace.""People often ask why my parents haven't left Africa. Simply put, they have been possessed by this land."

What a wonderful find. Alexandra Fuller captures the seduction of the African sun and burning landscape. The vast spaces that set the mind sailing seduced her parents and made them stay against great adversity. They lived in Kenya when British Colonists spent their days in royal comfort, but those days ended with a revolution and war in the 60’s. Ms. Fuller masterfully weaves the very personal history of her dramatic childhood and the life of her stiff upper lip parents against the backdrop of a tumultuous time. Her parents chose to remain in Africa after their lands were seized and to set up housekeeping in remote Zambia where they found peace under the” Tree of Forgetfullness”. I have ordered the third book in the trilogy of Ms. Fuller’s stunning memoir.[...]

I love the way she writes - the feel of her words going across my brain, for lack of a clearer expression. It’s steady, there are no extra words, the pace is brisk, the details are crisp. Her ear for spoken language is brilliant. Her descriptions of smells are without compare. This is the third book I’ve read by Ms. Fuller and I’ve loved them all. The moment I submit this review I’m going to begin my fourth one. I’m happy she’s such a prolific writer!

I enjoyed Fuller's other book, "Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight," so much that I immediately bought this one. While "Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness" is a good, solid book, there were enough similarities between the two that I often felt I was reading the first book over again. "Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight" paints a vivid, personal picture of Fuller's childhood in Africa. The hardships she endures, brought on by conditions, bad choices, and even worse luck, are an individual tapestry of place and time from the author's own perspective. I felt like I was right there with her, seeing life through the lens of her changing perspective as she matured. In "Cocktail Hour," Fuller focuses more on her amazing and sometimes maddening mother and her life before, during, and after Alexandra came into the world. It's true that her mother is a larger than life character, and she already figures prominently in the first book. If I had read "Cocktail Hour" first, I would probably give it four stars, but because so much of it already felt familiar, I was a bit disappointed. If you haven't read "Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight," I highly recommend it! If you want to read "Cocktail Hour" as well, I'd suggest letting a few months or years pass first so it feels more like a fresh book.

Ms. Fuller has written an intriguing story of her parents' lives in [mostly] eastern Africa, their struggles during and after British control and what the white farming experience was [and I guess is] like in that vast continent. She does an excellent job describing the beauty and horrors of living daily life there; particularly touching is the Fullers' deep love for Africa which is quite palpable throughout the book - they just can't imagine living anywhere else and always come back. I'd really like to know these people! No obstacle deters them from scratching out a living on various farms they either own or manage. And it's clear how much Ms. Fuller loves and admires them for their perseverance. Some of the descriptions of the surroundings and landscapes are so lovely - particularly as evening falls - that I felt as though I were sitting right there with Ms. Fuller and her mother as they reminisce together. Two minor negatives are 1) the book starts off a little jumbled and would have been better had it proceeded chronologically as it does as it gets going, and 2) more pictures and maps of the regions the Fullers lived and traveled in would have been helpful.
