What an amazing book. I am familiar with Teen Challenge but not its history nor David Wilkerson. This book is a fascinating read. I really felt David Wilkerson did a great job of conveying the feel of 1950's inner city New York. The grime, the gangs, the drugs, all come together under the watchful Holy Spirit of God to bring hope to these amazing people who started this great organization. This book should be read by anyone, not just those who are of Faith. I couldn't put it down!

This book is one of my favorites. When I was fifteen (many moons ago) our youth pastor gave this book to us to read. I couldn't put it down. I let my friends borrow it. When I was older I gave it to my fiancé when he went in to basic training to read and he passed it around and then the book got lost but I hope it ended up in someone hands that needed it. Then I read it again and the book is still good as ever.

After reading an abridged version of The Cross and the Switchblade, I was eager to hear how this movement had continued. I got my answers and also the answers to some of the threads left hanging in the first book. It's basically chronicling that unfolded with the Teen Challenge movement and how Wilkerson's life went on. For me it was not so riveting as the earlier days but I came away with appreciation for the humanness of the author in all his struggles and attempts to follow the leading of his God.

First used book I've ordered for myself. Have ordered multiple used books through Amazon, for my husband. His books have always came in good condition. I read this book, back in 1974, and it changed my life. Was excited to see I could order a "used" version, to reread. Surprisingly, this IS the 1974 version (thought by the picture that it was a more current publication). While the story is still good, the condition of the book was not as I expected. Brittle, yellowed pages, that crumble as I read. The last few pages keep falling out, and I have to shove them back in to finish the book. There actually was a little "mini" calendar of 1974 stuck in the book, when I received it. It surprised me, and I felt a sense of "deja vu" when I first opened it, but the quality of the pages really aren't what I was expecting.

This book helped change my life. It has touched my life more than anyone can imagine. David spoke about a personal relationship and love with God and the Holy Spirit that left me wanting to feel that same love. I searched for it and found it and my life and beliefs are so different. I only wish this book would be read by every young person, rather than some fictional book like Harry Potter. It would possibly help keep so many young people from getting involved with drugs, prostitution and witchcraft. As a parent of two children, they saw the love and joy this brought to me and they have both read it and also wanted to seek out what it has to offer. What a blessing The Cross and the Switchblade had brought to our lives.

The Cross and the Switchblade by David Wilkerson was a inspiring true story from the 60's that kept me engaged and wanting to read more. David Wilkerson, a Christian and small town preacher from Pennsylvania, felt a strong urge from God to go and help the boys and gangs in New York City. David Wilkerson started living out his faith boldly by traveling to New York City to walk around the streets and preach and evangelize to the gangs. After being in New York and making relationships, David Wilkerson sensed God telling him to move there full-time. Eventually, Wilkerson moved his whole family there and through a series of miracles ended up buying a huge house, later know as Teen Challenge, for the street teens to live in and go through drug rehab. Wilkerson helped a lot of people become Christians and get rid of drug and sex addictions.I (and I am a teenager) would recommend this book to any Christian or person who is young in his/her faith and wondering how God works through people. This was a really good book and a fairly easy read. I give this book 5 stars.

Purchased this for someone who is incarcerated thinking maybe it would hit home. I heard Nikki Cruz speak at The Brooklyn Tabernacle and like I said prayed that the person I bought it for might find "something" in it.I will never know as we are responsible for the input not the outcome, only time will tell. Not for everyone but definitely for the person I bought it for. The story of David Wilkerson was made into a movie way back in the 1960's I think played by Pat Boone. Wow how times have changed, one of the best selling books of 1959 was Twixt 12 and 20 by Pat Boone (who was Pat Boone lol), imagine that selling today? David Wilkerson walked where most men would not dare to walk into the streets of hell but saved a lot of souls. Truly a man of God if this type of book is for you.

J. Pepper Bryars began his career writing for military newspapers while serving in the Army National Guard, and he received the Army Commendation Medal for his deployment to Hungary in support of the peace-enforcement mission in Bosnia. Pepper then became a newspaper reporter, spent time as an aide to a congressman and governor, and served as a presidential appointee in the Defense Department. A large portion of the American public hardly deserves to have the great people of our military making such huge sacrifices for them. None of the small-minded politicians, who do not respect our military, and who use the military for their pet projects, deserve these people. I am continually amazed that America continues to have such people volunteer, while knowing their efforts might be wasted and denigrated for political ends.This book is well-written. The stories of each hero, as contrasted with the short-sighted, if not traitorous, actions and statements by some of the most despicable politicians with which this country has ever been afflicted, really hit home for me.

am now reading this book for the 2nd time. The number of years old 2000 & 2003, very interesting period in time. What I enjoyed reading was the different military units involved during this period. I want to make an initial comment on this book. If you get this book and start reading with theexperience of the author of this book, J. Pepper Bryars you will not want to put this book down. The remaining chapters are for are experiences of different Marines, army, navy organizations who being written about their experiences. When you read you will notice how each organizations look after each other, a death meaning finding the soldier and getting him home. I can't go any further. Last commet why has not a movie been made from this book. IF YOU LIKE REAL MILITARY ACTION GET THIS BOOK. I Loved it.

In this book Bryars depicts the raw emotions brought about in war, provides glimpses into the mindset of true warriors in times of battle, and shows the adaptability of Soldiers, over multiple deployments, who fought this war. This book is a must read in order to gain an understanding of the heroic efforts, critical decisions, and ultimate prices men and women paid for a politically unpopular event. As a Combat Veteran who served in Iraq during the height of 'The Surge', I encourage historians and all Americans to take the time to read this book in hopes it will provide more understanding and a deeper appreciation for the things this Nation asked our Service men and women to do.

Being personally knowledgeable with one of the hero's in the book, I thoroughly enjoyed reading about him and the other hero's. After reading, we can truly appreciate what our men and woman in the armed forces do for us. Everyone should become familiar with their sacrifices and how they protect the men who serve with them. These men are truly a brotherhood of comrades.

This is a well written book that gives the reader an excellent overall understanding of our post 9/11 military action in Iraq. The personal perspectives of soldiers was especially valuable. I would have preferred longer excerpts from each soldiers experiences. A worthy read nonetheless! Thanks Veterans!

Excellent book depicting many acts of unselfish valor. Unfortunately the theme overriding this and other books on Iraq and Afghanistan is SNAFU and FUBAR.

Makes you feel like you were there! Very well written and good descriptions of the battles. Everything is so realistic.

This seems slapped together very quickly, with essays of much different length and quality (and obviously written many decades apart). It contains typos, and things you'd think would never get past an editor, e.g. having almost the exact same essay twice in a row. There are still some real gems in here, of course: this is Pat McManus we're talking about. If you have all Pat's other books, go for it. Otherwise, complete your collection of earlier books first -- and you really should do that. It's sad that he's at or near the end of his writing career, but rejoice in all the laughs he's given us over many years.

I have enjoyed Pat McManus' humor for a long time. Many of his stories make me laugh to the point of being unable to continue reading because I was laughing so hard I was crying . This book is no different. Not all of the stories are at that level, but many are. I read a couple of the funnier stories to my wife after she asked what was so funny. At several points I was laughing so hard I couldn't go on. If you enjoy the outdoors many of these stories will hit close to home and will at least bring a smile to your face. If you have read McManus before you will enjoy this book. If you haven't read McManus before you will read this and then go in search of some of his other books.

This book was a disappointment for me. I have read most, if not all, of Patrick McManus' books and have thoroughly enjoyed his self-effacing humor and the cast of characters that populate his books. As McManus states in his preface, these stories came from a stack of folders in a closet that were under a sign reading, "Stories not collected in books." Most of them gave me a feeling of being only partially developed. Perhaps there was a reason they never made it into one of his books. I still love to read his writings and am constantly on the lookout for something new from Mr. McManus. Will I purchase his next book...sure, but this one was a bit of a disappointment.

McManus is always a good read. In the forward it's explained that these stories have been previously unpublished, but lay collected in a file drawer somewhere, so...why not publish them? There was some reason they weren't published before, and the quality of narrative and the level of humor is up and down as a result. Nevertheless, if you are a McManus fan, you'll enjoy seeing some of the earlier forms of some stories and of course his wit is still intact. Some guffaws, some laughs, some chuckles, some smiles, but worth the read. 4 stars means "I like it." Couldn't bear to go to 3 - "It's okay." It's better than okay!!! But not consistently Patrick's best. I hope you can tell...I'm a fan!

Some of the stories were funny, even very funny in places. Some were entertaining. Unfortunately, some were just plain boring. For me, the book actually dragged on and became a bit too long. Obviously, it would have been a quicker read and more enjoyable if the boring stories were left out.

I have been a fan of Patrick McManus for many years and his down-home style of telling humorous stories can easily be compared to Mark Twain ... on steroids. This guy is funny!If you want to be amused, read anything this man has ever written. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

This was the first book that I've read by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I love humorous stories and based upon the description for this book I was sure that I would enjoy it. I was not disappointed and I look forward to reading more by Mr. McManus!

Pat McManus is and has been my favorite author for years. I discovered his articles in outdoor magazines and read everything I could find that he wrote and still do. I have never been disappointed by an article or book. If you like to laugh, read Pat McManus.

Thought I would add a current review for the Kindle addition. Everything as described except that the map images are not viewable on the Kindle. You are able to navigate via the TOC and the Index. Problem with the index is that you are not sure exactly what ethnicity you are being taken to because it indexes different areas as they are mentioned in the text, not just that particula ethnicity. You select the page #, then you must go back until you find your heading. It may or may not be the ethnicity you intended.

Purchased as a quick guide to familiarize myself with diverse patient populations in hospital setting. Information is brief, concise, and informative. Recommend to any social worker or nurse manager to understand why cultures may not agree to modern medicine.

Great book, the story is woven at the border of visible with the invisible. It has a warm tone and this warmth envelops the hero’s journey. Great message, nice read. I hope we will get to read more of the writer’s story, she has a unique voice. For the feminists, the main character is a women heroin and you will enjoy the depth of her character.

I have to give kudos to the editorial team that handled the translation of both the Moribito books. I find translated books tend to be stilted and clunky in general. Not the case here! You'd never know this wasn't an English book in the first place.I loved the first one, but I have to admit that the second book is even better than the first. More satisfying, more sympathetic, more engrossing - and I loved the first one! Moribito satisfies with a tremendously rousing story that grips you and keeps you on the edge of your seat, and takes you to a completely different world that feels so original and fascinating. And I have to tell you, I had no clue what to expect in the grand finale. It was so original and impressive - and I tend to be the type of person who guesses everything that is going to happen. They say there is no original ideas - well, when you aren't familiar with another culture, it becomes original to you. And this book is fascinating for that reason.Balsa is also one of the best kickass heroines I've had the pleasure of reading. She was a bit stiffer in the first one, but in this story everything becomes personal for her, and we really get to see her true personality - and she rocks! I honestly can't wait for the next in the series.

I initially watched the anime, which covers only the first book. When I realized this second book was going to take place in Kanbal, Balsa's homeland, and not include any of the characters introduced in the first book, I was a little slow and unmotivated to get started with this. Another thing that made it hard for me to get going was knowing that the other books in this series have not been translated into english, and as far as I know, they possibly never will be.Still, I loved the book once I got going. Balsa is intelligent and a character to admire. This book did a great job shedding light onto her past, with so many unexpected revelations about it. And the ending was so poignant. It didn't pull any punches with the complicated feelings between she and Jiguro, who sacrificed the lives of eight of his closest friends to protect Balsa as she was a child. I'm now sad again that I've finished the book. She's heading back to New Yogo, to see Tanda again, and I would very much like to go with her. I wish they would translate the other books.

My thoughts on this one are pretty similar to the last - its strengths and weaknesses are much the same. Prose is smooth but a touch flat, world building is astounding - although in this one I did think Uehashi got a little carried away with the food. (Food is good! And oft-neglected in fantasy worlds! But geez.) This book had even more political intrigue than the last one, and I was totally hooked by it - for the second half of the story I barely came up for air.I missed Tanda and I hope he'll be in the next book (if, indeed, the next book ever gets translated into English, s-sob). The end of this book seemed to indicate he likely would. Also, this line? "Magic weavers can see spirits, right, Tanda? If I die, I'll come back to you as a spirit." BAWLING, OTP FOREVER GUYS.

Though skimpy on the pictures within with only maybe 4 top! I read another series called 'Dirty Pair' and it had a picture almost in every 15 pages! I love takubans because they are all eye candy mini novels for the most part and it's great to read a translated version of any Japanese release.On the story, it feels like Balsa's tale comes to an end here in her second story that pretty much wraps up everything about her life. That's a shame because I really wanted to read on her other exploits, but it was a wonderful ride in the end.I suggest to all if you're interested in this and the first book 'Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit' I also recommend the T.V. Anime adaptation of the first book. It's done by the same company who did the 'Ghost in the Shell' T.V. show!

I loved the anime and wanted to read more about the the characters next journey. This was a great read! Similar spirit/nature theme as the first story. And we come to know more about Jiguro and Balsas hometown. The writing was very vivid and captivating. I finished the book on a sunday, couldnt keep it down util it was over. I really wish the author would translate all the rest of the books in this series.

Perfect followup to the Moribito anime. I never read the first book, but the anime is one of my favorites. I know there are differences between the two, but it didn't affect my pleasure in reading this light novel. I loved it almost as much as I love the anime.
