In my opinion, this is a life or death issue and we are getting closer to a tipping point. I think EVERYONE should read this book. Heads up to my family members... this book is now on your Christmas gift list. If you take away just a fraction of the advice given in this book, you are helping to reduce your radiation exposure.

My grandson loved this and especially because he got it on his 6th birthday. It made him feel special. It is easy to read for him and he understands the silly jokes. I love this book!

Just gave this to my (almost) 6yr. old grandson. He LOVES it! Lol...I think my daughter's mad at me now as he won't put it down! Oh well, payback time! Lol

Loved the book! I’ve gotten one for each of my grandchildren as soon as they able to tell/understand the concept of puns and jokes. It seriously upped the quality of their jokes as well as encouraged them to read and deliver the jokes.

My grandson loved it so much he took it to school.

There is nothing funny in this joke book for 6 yr old, these jokes are dumb, stupid, worth nothing, a child will not be entertained by any of them, and certainly will not remember any of these jokes to pass them on. This book is a totalwaste of money and effort. Don't bother buying it. Cover is the only funny thing of this book.

My 6 year old niece absolutely loves this book! It’s easy to read and the way the jokes are laid out makes it easy for her to tell the set up from the punchline. I gave her this book at a family Christmas party last weekend. We asked her to tell a couple and she was off! Her delivery was perfect and her giggles after reading the punchlines kept us all laughing. I would definitely buy again.

Bought two for our 6 year old grandies. Such a delightful collection!

About the Author

Denis Wood, PhD, is an independent scholar living in Raleigh, North Carolina. He lectures widely and is the author of a dozen books and over 150 papers. From 1974 to 1996, he taught in the School of Design at North Carolina State University. In 1992, he curated the Power of Maps exhibition for the Cooper-Hewitt National Museum of Design (remounted at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, in 1994), for which he wrote the book The Power of Maps. His other books include Rethinking the Power of Maps; Making Maps, Third Edition (coauthored with John Krygier); and Weaponizing Maps (coauthored with Joe Bryan). John Fels, PhD, until his death in 2014, was Adjunct Associate Professor in the Graduate GIS Faculty at North Carolina State University. He worked as a professional cartographer with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and as a freelance cartographic designer and consultant, and developed and taught the core design curriculum in the Cartography Program at Sir Sandford Fleming College in Ontario. Dr. Fels was the author of the North Carolina Watersheds map and also coauthor (with Denis Wood) of The Natures of Maps. Maps are my thing and I always appreciate an in-depth book on the subject. However, in the case of this book, I felt that I couldn't get a clear focus on the main points the author wished to make. Maybe it's just me, be I was left feeling confused.

Today they are scribbled on the back of business cards, delivered with admonitions by our GPS, or arrive on our desktop from Mappy or Google. Most of us, if we reflect on maps at all, are likely to think of them as aids for getting from one place to another without getting lost, happy not to risk roadway suicide refolding their bed sheet-sized ancestors to fit the glove compartment! In the newspaper or on the Internet maps may also seem to be easy ways to digest data, viz., the red/blue state maps used to explain the 2008 US elections or tracking the spread of influenza. However, Denis Wood's sequel to The Power of Maps, takes us far, far deeper into the substratum of how we come to have and use these tools. It examines the assumptions we make about them and their import for both local and global communities.Wood subjects what we call "a map" to a strict historical scrutiny. At least in the West, maps are with few exceptions a product of the age of nation building. To quote the author, "The things we recognize as maps gained currency only in the last 400 years or so and within this period only in relatively stable states with entrenched, centralized bureaucracies and well-established academies." In truth, far from being passive reflections of geography, maps help construct the state as we know it.How does this work? Drawing boundaries and naming places are ways of affirming the existence of a state and its reach. The resulting maps, then, both affirm and are affirmed by the authority of the state. The existence of the map offered a sense of identity to both the population within and a claim of proprietorship against those without. Maps are used to tell us that "things are," and that they are "there." At their absolute worst, as history shows, they often give legitimacy, if not a sense of absolute righteousness, to engaging in seizure and genocide.Maps are not passive pieces of paper or pixels on your computer screen that they at first seem to be. While they present themselves as simply representing facts of nature and society, maps, whether gerrymandering local voting or school districts or staking a claim to territory, are in fact propositions supporting both local and geopolitical agendas in search of acceptance.Besides chronicling this power and agency of maps with numerous historical and contemporary accounts, Rethinking the Power of Maps contains a brilliantly written, major case study, the mapping and counter-mapping and counter-counter-mapping of Palestine. The focal point of this history is the claim to existence of the State of Israel and propositions as to its geographical reach. I started reading the book from the beginning, but found the cartographic language a bit daunting, so followed the author's suggestion of jumping to this illustrative chapter, whose story line and impact helped me make much better sense of the rest.Maps share in the power of culture, in which the making of maps has in fact become a part. They are social constructs shaping our reality. They operate like the most influential levels of culture, those that speak to us from below the waterline of consciousness about what we should believe to be real and meaningful. Maps easily close our minds and eyes to conflicting or competing realities that might challenge implanted values and attitudes. Whether justifying contemporary Israeli expansion or motivating the century long march of the "Manifest Destiny" of the white man in America, maps ease the conscience of both their creators and users. Who can argue with "what is?" Here as well as elsewhere rapacious abstraction has the power to gnaw at our humanity.Beyond tracking the basic story of the development of mapping and its purposes, Wood explores the impact of the legend and symbols and colors used in designing maps, what they tell us and what they hide, as well as how they advertise. The incisiveness and precision with which he examines elements that we take for granted on maps is at once a sociological and epistemological analysis of the minds of both makers and end users of maps. Inevitably this leads to counter-mapping as an expression of criticism and protest.Wood looks at the rise and fall of cartography as a scholarly discipline, both in the making and classification of maps. He points to a decline of sustainability in this academic venture, due to both internal and external criticism and the fact that technological tools are democratizing the ability to make maps. He provides numerous examples of "home grown" mapmaking taking on a life of its own, embodying both artistic elegance and a sense of affection for the places in people lives.Google, the blabbing GPS, et al, are now automating the past intentions and assumptions of mapmakers. Recognizing this, Wood becomes an unabashed advocate of "talking back to the map" and, in a populist sense, "taking back the map." This perspective and tone resonates through the entire the book, but is most explicit in Chapters 5 to 7 where alternative propositions, everything from activist criticism to Dada map art are explored. Wood argues that we need to get beyond the fictive "public participation" that is often championed with a political agenda of balancing support and interests for projects if we are to enter into real democratization of maps.Rethinking the Power of Maps, is not an easy read, but an eye opening one. I got this book to prepare for an end-of-the-world class in my Mythology course, despite not being much of a zombie fan, but ended up loving it. This book is nothing at all like the movie, and that's a good thing. As others have commented, it's told as individual stories told years after the events, and the characterization, and the thought about military, medical, and social implications are all compelling. There is some unexpected interweaving of stories as well. The narrators are from different places, professions, perspectives, and lifestyles, and the zombies are more like the zombies we know and sorta love since Night of the Living Dead. Definitely for the intelligent zombie fans, in particular in offering strategic ideas to those who, like my daughter, keep plywood, hammer and nails handy in case it becomes necessary to board up our windows when the zombies come.

Really enjoyed this book! I had seen the movie and enjoyed it but left with lots of questions. I was intrigued with the more mundane type of questions about a world with such zombies. How did things get this bad initially? How did people survive? I wanted to know more of the surrounding universe to a degree and this book delivered.It is not at all like the movie with a main character on some quest to save the world. It follows many different groups and people as they struggle with the outbreak of the global pandemic. It can be hard to follow sometimes with so many different people and situations going on but it is quite interesting. It presents a great picture of so many different countries and groups and their experiences combating or losing to the zombies. It is an amazing change of pace from what you would see as a traditional zombie/pandemic/world-ending event book. You get a sense of all the struggles and hard decisions that such an event would bring about. It's not some super hero or special agent saving the world. It's about regularly people struggling to survive and society coming together to combat the greatest enemy humanity has ever known.

This was an interesting, fairly entertaining read. The concept was clever, it was set up as an "oral history" of a great zombie war that almost wiped out the human race. Short "interviews" built the story from how the war started and what happened during in various countries at various times. The authors used this brief interview format to introduce a range of characters, many of who can be readily mapped onto current political figures and celebrities. The reason I give it only 3 stares is because I ended up thinking it sort ran out of gas about 2/3 of the way through. I was ready for it to be over, the stories got a little less interesting and, frankly at times simply boring. Edited down it would have been stronger.

I have to start by admitting it was difficult for me to get into this book at first but I'm so happy I stuck with it for a few stories. It's very different to me to begin in the middle of a story that the storyteller knows and the reader doesn't, but after a few entries it is so compelling to find out the history of the war from so many perspectives at so many points in time. The author does an amazing job at bringing a believable voice to narrators from all places, perspectives and walks of life. Some stories are stronger than others but none were boring to me. Some stories were so powerful and I imagine individual readers will identify and attach to each story differently. I really think there is something here for everyone. Although it begins with a story of "patient zero" the book is not on an entirely linear time table so be prepared to jump around in the history of the war. The author creates such a believable wartime picture through the people you get to meet and the details that it feels very real despite its premise. I especially liked experiencing the details of each story through the storyteller. You see each situation through their education level, job, age, life experience, prejudices, strengths and geography which keeps the book fresh throughout. A note about the film, it's not really a true adaptation at all, it's a fairly run of the mill zombie popcorn film. If you love the book, maybe don't take your expectations from the book into the movie and it may still be a fun watch but it does not have the power and interest of the book by a long shot. It mainly just shares a title and a skeleton of the story, kind of like reading The Serpent and the Rainbow and then seeing the movie by the same name. I would love to see World War Z made into a TV mini series and faithfully adapted, with each episode introduced at the start of the person being interviewed and showing their own personal story.

The movie was so disappointing compared to the book. I read the book and then listened to the audiobook version as well. Mark Hammil is great on that. This book really does a great job telling a complete story from the perspective of different narrators. I think this is the best zombie book I have read and lament the fact the movie pales in comparison. Pick this up if you aren't burn out on zombies by this point in the millennium
