About the Author

Falk Schwendicke is Deputy Head of the Department of Operative and Preventive Dentistry at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Germany and a Visiting Fellow at the University of Otago, New Zealand. Dr. Schwendicke is also an Associate Editor of BMC Trials and on the Editorial Board of Community Dentistry Oral Epidemiology. Dr. Schwendicke graduated in Dentistry in 2008 from Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and subsequently worked in general practice in Germany and the UK. In 2013 he was appointed Associate Professor and Head of Section for Cariology and Preventive Dentistry at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, subsequently taking up his current post in 2015. Dr. Schwendicke holds a PhD (for a thesis on selective excavation) from Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and a Master of Dental Public Health (MDPH) from the University of Manchester. His research interests include the minimal­ and micro­invasive treatment of carious lesions and evidence-based dentistry and translational research. He is a member of the editorial boards for the Journal of Dental Research and the International Journal of Dental Hygiene and has published numerous original articles in peer-reviewed journals. In 2015 he received the Lion Dental Research Award from the IADR.

I first read a copy of this book from my public library published in the mid seventies. I was so impressed even though it was difficult reading at times because of the style of language in the 1600's. I viewed many copies for sale on this website and looked at their beginning pages to compare them to the book I had read. This one appeared to be identical, but when I received it, only the first few pages were Brother Lawrences's words. The rest was someone else's interpretation and editing which wasn't what I wanted. I don't know how to find a copy of the original manuscript without editing because all the other copies did the same thing, with someone else editing and changing the writing. The experience was akin to the writer of Harlequin novels rewriting "Gone With The Wind" in simpler language for less proficient readers. I was VERY disapponted. This is NO reflection on the seller. The book was in excellent condition physically, not just what I was hoping for between the covers.

What can you say about a book that takes you by the hand and guides you on a path God has been leading to you your entire life? If you do not love and desire God above all things, this book will make no sense to you. But if you are called by grace to long for the Lord as he longs for and loves our souls, then this book will be a priceless treasure in your life and the one to come. Amen. And I recommend as a companion to this work "The Cloud of Unknowing and the Book of Privy Council" by Anonymous, translated into modern English by Carmen Acevedo Butcher. Contemplative Christian prayer is not emptying your mind or chanting or mindfulness or anything like that, it is all about God's love and loving Him.

This reading will add depth to anyone's spiritual life? I tend to purchase highly recommended items in the first place so I don't have to bother with returns. This book gives me peace and is a great help on remembering God in my small sufferings. (I have terminal cancer). I was always told to 'offer it up' and this book reminds me to do just that. I don't always remember when things go downhill but do ask Him to remember that if I could remember, that is what I would say.

This is a classic, and well rearded. As such, I have probably placed too high a mark on it as a recommendation. Brother Lawrence lived in the 16th Century as a lay brother in a monestery in France. As the cook, he developed a sancity and a holiness that was observed by many, and a joyfullness in his life as a result of his relationship with God.This little book contains the conversations, letters and spiritual maxims of Brother Lawrence in very modern and easy to understand English translation. His practical devotion is to recognize, embrace and worship the imminence of God. Making every moment of his life, and every simple action, even the washing of dishes, a prayer and sign of that connectedness, as well as surrendering his will to that of God, Brother Lawrence was able to experience the trascendant as the imminent.There are may spiritual classics out there that are probably better reads than this one, and many that will probably impact the reader more forcefully. However, this simple book about a simple man with a simple way of connecting with God should be read by anyone on that path.

Great book should be recomended reading for all christians desiring a deeper walk. Can be a bit hard to follow sometimes since the language is from the 1600s. Still It is a great book. I was given this book over 30 years ago and still find it relevent. In todays busy constant contact world we forget about the desire our Lord has to be in constant felllowship with Him. We have no problem doing facebook, tweeting texting, emailing and the like but we cant even acknowledge that our God is with us and desires to fellowship with us. This man found a way and it is so simple that anyone, if it trully is what they want, can attain.

This short book has had a profound impact on my spiritual life. Brother Lawrence set himself the task of living with a conscious awareness of God's presence and in constant dialogue with God. He found immense joy and satisfaction in doing so. After reading this, I set myself about the same task, and I can say that although I have been doing it only for about four months, I have experienced tiny glimpses of what he talks about. (He says that to develop the habit takes about ten years, and I think he means for a monk, so I think it will likely take me longer.) I find this book very enlightening and encouraging, and have re-read it a number of times.A word of caution, though: the benefits of practicing the presence of God depend on you actually wanting to know and be with God. People have a lot of different motivations for their religious practice, and I have found that even some highly motivated religious people are really interested in parts of spirituality other than knowing God. (This is not a criticism, just an observation.) If your motivation for your spirituality is something else, then you probably won't find this book very useful, any more than a person interested in, say, yoga would find interesting a book on, say, football. I found myself working through some of these issues only *after* setting out to practice the presence of God, so this heads-up might save you some time.

This is a book every Christian should reread once a year. We get so busy, distracted, bogged down, and we forget God's promises to, "be with us always." That means, in the car, the kitchen, the shower, bed, asleep, exercising etc. SO lets practice the sensation of His presence. As I sit at my desk right now, I feel His presence behind me and it brings me such peace. Great are You Lord!

This book is life changing. It is simple and seemingly repetitive, but there is newness of concepts presented if you have the patience to search the text deeper and perhaps read more than once.It is a breath of fresh air in the spiritual life, at once liberating and demanding of souls seeking to follow God.One takeaway: We have little time in this world. Let us love our Creator and seek to remain in His Presence.

What a great book cover! I picked it up for that reason alone. Lyndall Gordon's book is an examination of five female authors who, in her estimation, "changed the world." The five are: Mary Shelley, Emily Bronte, Virginia Woolf, George Eliot and Olive Schreiner. You've probably heard of the first four, the fifth I hadn't ever heard of. She categorizes them as Prodigy (Shelley), Visionary (Bronte), Outlaw (Eliot), Explorer (Woolf) and Orator (Schreiner).As the publisher of this work is John Hopkins University Press, I'm assuming this book is an outgrowth of a dissertation or lecture series. The writing, while colorful, carries all the hallmarks of this genre. While readable, the text definitely has academic purpose. The reader should be conversant with the women's works, or else you might be lost; the author assumes the reader is familiar with them. From chapter to chapter, the author links the authors through some characteristic, life event or literary mentorship. In a popular work of nonfiction, I don't think these links would even be necessary.All in all, read this book for its portraits of these writers as women who defied the conventions of their time and worlds. Whether you're familiar with their books or not, you can admire the conviction and courage it took to live unconventional lives that placed them outside the bounds of acceptable society.

I began reading this book hoping for a comparative biography of five groundbreaking women authors who had defied the shackles of their rigid societies and found ways to thrive through reading and writing. I suppose I got most of that but not quite in the way I was expecting.This reads like a textbook or series of connected essays. Each of the women’s stories is covered thoroughly and biographical elements are fleshed out in thorough detail. But the focus is on how each of them, in their own ways, rejected the norms of the society and times they were living in and embraced their outsider status. For some, this was a conscious decision while others were more-or-less reacting to circumstances. Throughout the book there is a strong streak of feminism, especially for the later authors who lived through the beginnings of the women’s suffragist movement.I was happy with the content that the author delivered. I am less enthusiastic about the style. This is not an easy read and I frequently found myself re-reading paragraphs to make sure I understood the material. At times I felt like I was reading this as part of a graduate-level course on Literature or Women’s Studies. Given the author’s background and status as a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and a fellow of St. Hilda’s College in Oxford, this is hardly surprising. In the end, I would have preferred a more grounded biography and less of an academic approach.

Gordon offers some interesting biographies of five women writers who advanced the feminist movement. She progresses through time, from Mary Shelley to Virginia Woolf. I love the way she ties the women together by showing how earlier writers influenced the views of the younger writers.Each biography stands well on its own. I’ve read longer or shorter bios of Shelley, Bronte and Woolf. I did get a bit of feeling that Gordon was perhaps trying to present these women in a specific light, generally that conveyed by the title of each chapter:1) Prodigy – Mary Shelley2) Visionary – Emily Bronte3) ‘Outlaw’ – George Eliot4) Orator – Olive Schreiner5) Explorer – Virginia WoolfThis book does focus much more on the author herself and what influenced her viewpoints and her writing, than on the writing itself. This is not a literature review by any means, but it’s not presented that way.Overall, a worthwhile read for those interested in feminism as well as those with an interest in any of these authors. The influences between the authors are quite interesting. These authors were very different in some ways, but they had intertwined, or even the same, longterm goals. I found the way that their different worldviews influenced their choices quite interesting.But that’s JustMe.

In the past, women who ventured beyond the accepted boundaries became outsiders, whether they wanted to be or not. In Outsiders, Lyndall Gordon examines the careers of five women who were outsiders in their societies, and how they paved the way for others. Like many who read this book, I knew four of the writers, but was not familiar with Olive Schreiner. The five were outsiders in more than their aspirations and accomplishments. Some refused to wear corsets, others made friends with "unsuitable" people. They all grew up without a mother. All wrote books that transcended the safe space of "women's novels," nd experimented with style and genre. At times the book is academic and ponderous, but then it picks up speed and sprinkles in some fascinating tidbits or sparkling analysis. Well worth a look for a fresh take on five renegade writers.

Lyndall Gordon describes the private lives and professional careers of five prominent women writers. She highlights many of the similarities between the lives and works of these authors even though they were from different generations. Gordon’s book stimulates an interest in the writings of the authors she chronicles. Gordon’s own writing style, however, is distracting. Her abrupt transitions often make it difficult to follow to whom she is referring. The lack of a smooth flowing narrative creates a jumble of facts and observations. Most disappointing is the failure of Gordon to explicitly address the claim of the book’s subtitle and describe how these women changed the world. Gordon tells of the women’s accomplishments but not of their impact. Gordon’s portraits do provide readers with examples of courageous women who dared to live authentic lives and, as a result, were compelled by society to live as outsiders.

As many others have said, if you have a 120 series car, buy this. If you have a p1800, look somewhere else. This covers almost nothing on the p1800 that I have seen aside from whatever is shared with the 120 series. Good book though.

If you're maintaining a vintage Volvo (and I suspect most folks looking at this aren't reading these for entertainment) you'll find that this is a very good addition to your library. In some ways it's even better than the model specific factory Volvo "green book" for the 1800.

GOOD REFERENCE

Comprehensive diagrams, Systematic troubleshooting, in depth repair guides. All of this and more can be found in this book. Add in the quality binding and the usability of the layout, and there's no reason not to make this your go-to vintage volvo repair guide

This provides nearly everything you could want in an enthusiast's manual. It is not the equivalent of a Volvo shop manual set, but it is very good. The graphics are very clear and complete.

This book is not a good book for the Volvo 1800 series. Sure, it has some mechanical and electrical information, but VERY LITTLE other than what overlaps the 120 and 130. It appears to me that Haynes added a few paragraphs (and I mean literally a few) just so they could put "plus P1800" on the cover.I was extremely disappointed in the lack of specific 1800 series diagrams and info.Definately would NOT make this purchase again.

I call this a "nice" read because Heather Lunde's style and stories made me feel good and relaxed and yes, happy. Her descriptions of people are not so much about quirkiness particularly, but more about the people who make up a unique town. I"m sure anyone could make up some of the same stuff about their neighborhood if they really thought about it. But she applies the venue of Haines, Alaska, to the people adding the survival challenges and the stories become more engaging. Her descriptions of life and death are sort of matter of fact, but somehow feel inclusive. I'm sure the town has plenty of darkness to it that she doesn't describe. It was a good book to read at night before bed or between appointments, easy to pick up and put down because it's not plot-driven.

"When someone you love dies senselessly, the line between grief and anger gets really blurry," wrote Heather Lende. She writes obituaries, talks to those who grieve, listens patiently to their stories, and shares humorous anecdotes. She also knows it will be dark at 2:00 p.m. and not daylight until 10:00 a.m. the next day, during the winter.Heather lives in Haines, small-town, Alaska. It would take more than a pry-bar, or a stick of dynamite, to make her change locations. "If you lived here, I'd know your name," she writes, with blunt veracity.Heather lives with eulachon (hooligan-grunion) runs, wild moose visitors, grounded mail delivery planes in the winter, and bedside church choirs.The only road leading out winds through Canada. Four hours to White Horse (in good weather), then Canadian customs and 120 miles to Haines Junction, in the Yukon Territory. I smile, recalling two times when we stopped in Dawson Creek on our road trips to Alaska. The Alaska Highway stretched ahead and we were fool hardy adventurous. 1500 miles of gravel could shred tires. One chapter I particularly liked was devoted to her attempt at making her favourite egg salad sandwich from entirely home-grown ingredients against a multitude of interruptions:'This, finally, is how you make the perfect egg salad sandwich: boil two eggs,rise them in cold water, and peel them. Add some half-and-half, a pinch of salt, and ground pepper. Mash it all up with a fork and spread it on toasted sourdough bread...Lay on lettuce leaves, then a thick slice of tomato. Spread some mayonnaise on the other piece of toast and place it on top. Cut it diagonally; put it on a china plate, next to a cloth napkin next to a cup of hot tea. RUTH WARINER lives in Portland, Oregon. After Wariner left Colonia LeBaron, the polygamist Mormon colony where she grew up, she moved to California, where she raised her three youngest sisters. After earning her GED, she put herself through college and graduate school, eventually becoming a high school Spanish teacher. She remains close to her siblings and is happily married. The Sound of Gravel is her first book.

I hope that everyone that has experienced a troubled childhood will read this griping and inspiring memoir.I heard about The Sound of Gravel first on Twitter, when I Tweeted the author, and then later that day found out she is my cousin. Seriously. I was given an Advance Reader Copy and was riveted until I read the last page. Reading Ruth's story was so much like reading about my own life growing up in a violent, polygamist cult. My review is so personal because, even though our lives were separated by the heinous crime my father, Ervil LeBaron had committed against her father, Joel, in 1972, we survived the same type of neglect and deprivation, among other horrors.Ruth makes the shows, documentaries, news reports and other media you see on television about the fundamentalist Mormons come to life, even as you are wishing nobody ever had to experience such realities.Thank you, Ruth, for your vulnerability, bravery and courage. I applaud you!This is a photo of Ruth and I when we met for the very first time on December 3, 2015.

Ruth's story had me spellbound from the first page as I followed her every move, totally captivated by this awe inspiring memoir. When I finished the book my heart yearned to know what happened next? It just ended too soon. My heart has been touched in a way a book or story seldom has. Her courage, strength and determination saved lives and it is my humble belief that her story will continue to impact and inspire others to do the right thing.

I can't believe this is Ruth Wariner's first book. I just can't believe she's a first-time author. Her use of language to convey this gut-wrenchingly stark story is absolutely masterful. As a non-fiction lover I've read quite a few memoirs and I can think of none so captivating and utterly gripping as this one.I was given an advance reading copy. I tried not to have expectations one way or the other when I started the book. When I finished the book later that same day, what little expectations I had were far, far exceeded. I look forward to the release date in January so I can re-read.I hope she writes a sequel that picks up where she left off!

(NOTE: Review based on Advance Reader's Copy) Ruth's memoir of growing up in a polygamist community and her eventual escape from it is one of those books you will not be able to put down until you finish.The truth is, as part of team who read ARC's I saw other readers talk about how they stayed up late to finish or read it all in one day and I thought it must be hyperbole. Then I got the book myself, started it, and promptly text my boss that I was going to need the next day off so I could finish it (she didn't agree).Ruth is a baby when her father is murdered and her mom remarries Lane, a man who neglects and abuses his families. Ruth's family lives in an unfinished home that she describes as smelling like mouse droppings, having no indoor bathroom, or electricity. In this home, her mother raises her children - there are eventually 10 children, three with special needs - with minimal support from her husband, welfare that she crosses the border from Mexico to the US to get, and her own willpower.Her mom is a true believer in the polygamist life and the rules/theology of their particular community. In this, she is both sympathetic and infuriating. I found myself wanting to shake her and "make" her protect her children and stand up for herself.Ruth's story is rough - there is neglect and abuse, loss and fear. She writes with great love and compassion about her siblings, mom, and grandparents. Even when her mother fails her repeatedly, Ruth acknowledges the failure without bitterness or trying to reason away her mom's action or inaction. She had done a wonderful job with her family's story; this book is well worth your time.

This story is both heartbreaking and heartwarming all at the same time. Ruth Wariner has done an excellent job of taking the reader into the polygamist group she grew up in, and allowed us to follow along on her intense personal journey of escape. I could not put this book down and recommend it highly. Beautifully done.

I am Ruth's cousin. This book is a testament to her strength and perseverance. I was raised in a very similar way and know how difficult it must have been for her. This book is a must read!

It is hard to describe the feelings, the memories, horror, embarrassment and anger this INCREDIBLE, beautifully written book filled me with. Memories because I was there, on the sidelines of Ruth's account this polygamist group.I knew Ruthie as a young child. I knew her birth father, her step-father, her mother... I knew them well enough to bear witness to the raw truthfulness of Ruth's account. I'm shaking inside with such anger at what she and her siblings were forced to live through! Horror and disgust brought me to tears at Lane's enormous, despicable part in her abuse, and at her mother's spineless blindness. I cringe remembering that my own life so closely paralleled hers... and her mother's... for most of my younger life.I'm beyond thankful Ruthie had the strength and the grit to stand up for herself and her siblings! And, oh, I'm so happy she is free and strong and has become a brave, truthful voice of the horrors all too often hidden inside the ugly belly of Joseph Smith's polygamy. This book deserves 10 stars and a top place on the Best Seller list.

I could not put this book down! Ruth shares her story of her escape from a polygamist cult. She overcame the unimaginable, as she faught for herself and her siblings. I shed tears for her pain. You will not regret this purchase.
