Nice presentation of information; easy to understand and apply. Lots of colorful diagrams and pictures. Love the tear out chapter quizzes in the back (caution if you buy the book used,they might have been ripped out). I did find one error in the quizzes: Chapter 12, question 9-the answer should be "b" and the key has "d". Other than that-love it!

I really liked this book. I read 435 pages of it and the class was really fun at wazzu :)

I bought this for a class. The text is well organized and detailed. The book breaks down the details of nutrition making it easy to understand and building from one chapter to the next. I came away from the class with a much better understanding of how I should eat in order to be healthy, how my body uses food and how it reacts to food.

This book explains the same chapters as the book but in layman terms. Easy to understand microbiology with this book, I just couldn't understand the school micro book. The questions and answers from schaum's are not the exact questions from the school exam. So, if you can understand the questions and answers from each chapter, then you will not have trouble with your test at school and that is because it is the same question but asked in a different way. Do not memorize the question and answers from schaums, it will not help you, find each answer on your own and that way you will have the knowledge and ace your exams at school. Good luck :)

I bought this book to augment my text book/studyguide for my University 300 level introductory medical microbiology course. This book fit the bill perfectly. It is in a question and answer format, has pictures, diagrams and quizzes at the end of each chapter. I would read this before I read my textbook, and would do the practice quizzes after I read my textbook and it really helped me to understand and remember the concepts. This study guide is also a lot more up to date than my text book was, so that was nice as well. Great practice quizzes... I got a 4.0!

This book is helpful because it has a lot of problems to help prepare for exams. I did not think it did a very good job explaining concepts. Just an outline of the chapter. Additionally there were several typos.

This arrived early and looks like a good book. I will use it to supplement my textbook for microbiology class. Looks like it will help a lot!

I think this book is wonderful, when I had my Microbiology class I used it along with my microbiology textbook by name "Microbiolgy, An Introduction." by Gerald J Tortora. You know it really prepared my for my exams and it made microbiology even more interesting. You know I got of final grade of an A!!.I think any serious student of Microbiology should give it a try.

This is a useful introduction to those unfamiliar with microbiology.Would not recommend to University students, as it covers too little too thinly.This would work well as Summer reading over the break, if you plan to take introductory microbiology in the coming semester.

Thank you for this book. Easy to understand .Great way to prepare for exam. I would definitely recommend it !

I really enjoyed Practical Programming for Strength Training because it answers many of questions I was left with after reading Rippetoe's Starting Strength book. It has been useful for me as someone who trains, someone who advises his wife on how to train, and someone who demands to know the reasons behind the programs laid out by Rippetoe.The Starting Strength book focuses primarily on the major lifts - how to do them, and why they are done that way. It does a very good job of this and is an invaluable tool for trainees and coaches alike. The end of the book lays out the basic Starting Strength novice program, which is working impressively well for both my wife and me at this time. Staring Strength is an excellent book for what it purports to be: a guide to "starting" strength training. However, the layout of the Novice program laid out is very basic, and it does not answer a lot of the questions that a serious trainee will inevitably start asking: what if I advance beyond the novice stage? What do I do if I'm returning to training after being ill for a few weeks? What if I have an injury? What if someone does not fall within the 18 to 35 age range? Etc. And of course, there is always the burning question of "Why is the program set up as it is?" and the follow-up "What constitutes good programming and why?"Practical Programming for Strength Training answers these and other questions in a very clear, thorough, and well-ordered fashion. It gives the reader a well-rounded understanding of the physiological mechanisms behind strength adaptation, upon which it lays out and justifies the novice, intermediate, and advanced programs. It goes into detail about various circumstances trainees may encounter during their progress towards getting stronger.All-in-all it is a very thorough, easy-to-understand, and well-argued book which provides the serious trainee or coach with a solid foundation in knowledge about programming for strength training.Unless you have considerable competence with barbell training, I would recommend starting with the Starting Strength book before moving on toPractical Programming for Strength Training.

Finally, someone put together a weight lifting program that works for seniors! I had been using a three day a week program with 5 work sets for each of 4 exercises and 1 work set for the deadlift. As I increased weiights, after 3 months, I was constantly sore and becoming bone-tired and rundown. Finally, I injured my rotator cuff which set me back almost 2 months.After receiving Mark's new book, I restarted using a two workout per week program witha light day for squats and back-off sets for the other exercises. I am making steady gaiins and am able to enjoy my normal life pain free. Thanks Mark, for giving us old war horses a sensible program for life. I'll be 70 in September 2014.

You better enjoy pushing very hard on barbell exercises though because the whole book centers around them and close variants. Anyone easily demoralized by hard efforts under a bar will need to change their attitude if they want to get anything out of this.

To use a poor analogy: It’s like learning how to cook so you make your own recipes. But here you are cooking up a better and stronger you.You learn when to go up, when to slow down and need to understand that it changes and is not a rite recipe to follow. But there are rules. And the rule for the beginner is to go slow, and do a linear progression — rest, add a little weight, repeat. On the core excercises!It’s hard to find a formulaic way when in strength training you are having a conversation with your bodies ability to grow stronger and it’s need to rest. This book gives you the language and dialogue to do that. I used this to to successfully migrate from the many-gym-machine program my YMCA had me on into a much more successful, safer, and knowable system for strength training.BTW: how does this compare to the other viable alternative out there? 5/3/1 I can’t tell you but it has worked for beginners and Rip also endorsed it. From this interview he gave (muscle and fitness) I quote: “Aside from "Starting Strength Basic Barbell Training," what other modern strength programs do you like?The only other one I like is Jim Wendler’s 5-3-1 program. It’s an excellent late intermediate and advanced program. ”But late intermediate means you should already be fluent in speaking weights. So do that here.Also: the advise in this book is gender neutral apart from very minor tweaks and for the ladies which is covered in a few pages. This will do wonders for your bones. See the Barbell Prescription book for more on that.

However, most of what I look up isn't in this price guide. It is nicely illustrated. Maybe useful for beginners, but I was looking for a far more detailed price guide.

Didn't really have the information I was looking for. I worked with what it did have, but had to search hard for it.

Very organized guide to royal doulton pieces. Pictures are very clear and closeup, making identification easy. If you own any Royal Doulton pieces or are intending to purchase any, this is the book to have.

About the Author

Ren Holland was born in the tourist town of Park Rapids, Minnesota, in 1937. He was raised at a small store and resort owned by his parents, Elmer O. Holland and Betty Lauder Holland, at Little Mantrap Lake near Itasca State Park. Ren and his sisters, Grace and Betty, helped their parents with routine tasks at the store and cabins until the resort was sold in 1950. During high-school in Park Rapids, Ren worked at Blewett's Resort (Vacationaire) on Island Lake. Later, he worked at Fuller's Tackle Shop in Park Rapids, a traditional headquarters for tourist information and fishing supplies. Ren attended the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, receiving a BA degree in art and a BS degree in art education. He received a master's degree in art education at St. Cloud State University and taught art at Little Falls Community High School, retiring in 1996. In 2004 he wrote and published The Edge of Itasca, a book about the individuals and families associated with early Itasca State Park and the Mississippi Headwaters area. Ren and his wife, Ida Mae, live on the Mississippi River, across from Charles A. Lindbergh State Park, at Little Falls, Minnesota. They have two children, Randy Holland and Renee Holland Theisen.

What an excellent book on Minnesota Resort Culture! Incredible photos and history of this long-lost piece of our history.Well-documents one of the under-reported costs of the expansion of restricted-use park lands (the BWCA), and the forced-removal & closure of a wide range of small family businesses that once offered a 'natural' in-the-woods experience to the general public, without the need to hump in a pack, port in and paddle a canoe, and sleep outdoors in a tent with the bugs, in order to experience the boundary lakes in Northern Minnesota. Not everyone wants the 24/7 nature experience (I' built a cabin in the Superior National Forest, I should know ;p): Resort culture used to service that niche. And those business didn't fade away due to lack of customers. They were shutdown by the US Forest Service, to make way for the new'Thou shalt only recreate THIS WAY!', approach.For folks that prefer a 'lodge' to a 'tent', this transition was a sad loss. And this book is a nifty document of that time and place.

The pictures were so good. It was like a trip down memory lane for me to read about the resorts on Leech Lake. I found the other lakes and pictures just as interesting. I would love to time travel back to those days in the 30's, 40's, 50's, and 60's to see what those resorts and lakes looked like back then. This book is the next best thing!If you are a long time resident or a long time visitor to Minnesota this book is for you. I recommend it highly.

An excellent history of resort life in early 20th century Minnesota. Lots of research went into this. Seems to me to have been a very difficult subject to research. Great job, Ren!

There are few systematic in-depth reviews of Minnesota resort joys. This is the BEST! Anyone who seeks to find outwhat made Minnesota a unique family retreat should read this book. Alternatively, it is sad. High priced real estate has replaced this wonderful and enjoyable family vacation site with individual exclusive property.

Brilliant mind, and unengaging writing. Hard to plow through this classic of queer theory, but, I'm told, it's worth it.

Reading it seems dated now but it's such a classic, anyone interested in gender studies should have a copy of this book... even though it's almost impossible to read. The cover has a pleasing rubbery/matte finish too.

I did not give this book 5 stars because (1) often I found Butler not clearly expressing her own ideas and opinions as opposed to weaving too much into the accounts she gave of others and (2) her position is not clearly cognizant of its own premises. Specifically, Butler is taking to task the issue of the subject, subject-object dualism, and issues of power. However, her work presumes that only one theory of the subject is possible, that it requires subject-object dualism--which she rejects--and her theory of power is unclear and messy. She wants to get rid of the idea of a "SUBJECT" and leave room for agency, in the possibilities that exist between the different ways people are constructed through different knowledges. Yet, the way she gets rid of the subject entails that nothing exists to be free, to have agency. IMHO this analysis needs more subtlety here.It also needs to be clear about how the rejection of modern subjectivity goes hand in hand with the rejection of subject-object dualism. Do other forms of subjectivity--or more importantly agency--exist outside of subject-object dualism.In short she does not question the presumptions of the Nietzschean-Foucaltian genealogy. Thus, she leaves herself open to legitimate attacks.Is the book worth reading--YES! Butler's analysis raises great questions and challenges for traditional approaches to subjectivity. Yet, the limitations are very strong because they presume too much.

This is one of the most important texts that I have ever read. Life changer. Butler's writing is simultaneously complex, rigorous, and accessible.

This book is very dense and difficult to get through. However, if you stick with it, you'll be glad you did! Butler presents very compelling arguments about gender, sexuality, and gender construction/performance, that will definitely alter the way you think about gender.

Good book

Butler is of course incredibly thoughtful and intelligent, and an important read for anyone interested in gender theory/performativity/feminist studies. However, this particular edition had an annoying number of typos; I'm not sure if it was proofread.

Great ideas but very hard to follow. The writing style is one that I don't care for.

this is a great collection of designs to work with ..some are easy, some are not, but all are beautiful.

This book has great designs, many are difficult though but they inspire me for my ceramic designs. Nice book with a great variety of designs.

This is a great addition to my art-reference library. I just sometimes visually soak in reference before beginning a personally developed art project. Gets the juices flowing in a given direction.

I was always interested in Islamic designs, especially when I learned how to make some of them in geometry class in high school. I wanted this book as a reference, for which it was good. It also showed how to make some of the designs, but not all or most. However, something is better nothing, so for the price, I guess it's definitely worth it.
